Libya

Libya is an Arabic country in northern Africa, with a great deal of wealth from its oil production. The government - officially the Libyan Peoples Arab Socialist Jamahiriya - is a rather cranky military dictatorship pretending to practice a form of radical participatory democracy, led by Muammar al-Gaddafi, whose name is also spelled some 32 different ways in the English language.

Libyans enjoy a rather middle-class lifestyle and low poverty, especially for an African country, which has little to do with Gaddafi's wingnuttery and crank economic ideas, and a lot to do with Libya's high oil revenues.

Libya's flag is a simple green field, symbolic of its inhabitants' devotion to Islam.

Libya was frequently involved in sponsoring terrorism during the 1980s, leading to Ronald Reagan at one point declaring Gaddafi public enemy #1 and launching a bombing attack on Libya in 1986, but after 9/11 Libya has attempted to kiss and make up with the Bush regime and renounced terrorism.
