The British Broadcasting Corporation, (usually called the BBC, or, colloquially, "the Beeb", or "Auntie Beeb") is the world's largest broadcasting corporation, going by audience numbers.

It was founded in 1922 as the British Broadcasting Company Ltd, but was nationalised and made a state-owned but independent corporation in 1927.

The corporation produces radio and television programmes, and sells books, CDs and DVDs related to these. It also maintains a large internet presence. The mission of the BBC is "to inform, educate and entertain", and its motto is "Nation Shall Speak Peace Unto Nation".

The BBC's charter states that it must be politically neutral in its broadcasting; it maintains this neutrality by offending Conservative and Labour governments alike.
