Nazi Germany
From RationalWiki
Nazi Germany is the period in German history between 1933 and 1945 when one of the most evil men in the history of the world became German Chancellor, took over half of Eastern Europe and killed six million Jews as well as Roma Gypsies, homosexuals, and anyone else who got in the way of the Germans obtaining lebensraum in Eastern Europe.
[edit] A brief history
The early 1930s was a pretty lousy time for most the world, what with the Great Depression and all; this led to support for extremism, such as communism, fascism and Nazism, all over Europe. Hitler was elected in January 1933, gained dictatorial powers a few months later after he accused the communists of burning down the German parliament house, and (to cut a long story short) tricked Britain and France into thinking his annexation of Austria and his invasion of the Sudetenland wouldn't lead to anything else afterwards.
Then he went and invaded Poland in 1939, breaking his word, which touched off World War II[1]. After six years of fighting, Hitler, along with most the other Nazi leaders, shot and poisoned themselves. The communists got the eastern half of Germany and the liberals got the other half; West Germany prospered very much while East Germany continued to suffer. But it all worked out in the end, and now Germany has a nice democracy where extremism is against the law.
[edit] "Don't mention the war!"
I wouldn't go to Germany and bang on about this general period of history if I were you. You could be arrested.
[edit] Footnotes
- ↑ As far as Europe is concerned anyway. In East Asia, the war had been going on for a few years already.
