East Germany

East Germany was part of the Soviet Empire during the Cold War. After the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 East Germany became genuinely democratic. A year later the East German people voted democratically to reunite with West Germany. After that Germany became one single country. The terms, “Former East Germany” and “Former West Germany” refer to parts of Germany which used to belong to East Germany and West Germany respectively.
