Slovenia[edit]

Good work on Kramberger. :D 195.210.233.220 (talk) 14:40, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Well, here goes[edit]

My first edit on a wiki that was not my user page. Here's hoping that I am not screwing it up.

I just got your message about the second email I sent you. Thank you for explaining that out to me. I do not necessarily have my finger on the pulse around here, as it were. Mostly along for the ride, trying to help things in the ways that I can.

If it is OK with you, then I am going to take the messages I sent you, and make them my user page. Might give people here a better understanding of me than a link to my facebook.

Sounds reasonable to me. P-Foster (talk) 19:54, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

NYC[edit]

If you have time and don't mind a short trip into Queens, you might consider this beer garden if the weather is nice. It's a magical happyland. ATP (talk) 19:35, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

Your recent block[edit]

If you are going to engage in 'robust' debate with Rob as in this edit [1] you really shouldn't block him for 10 years when he responds "robustly" [2] . No offence, and I certainly agree with you that RobS is a nob, but you started the "robust" argument with him and it is highly unfair that you block him. --DamoHi 03:16, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Fuck him. It felt good. And I knew that somebody would revert it in a few minutes. And fuck him. He's a troll who brings NOTHING of value to this community. ZERO value added. At least Bohdan was good for a laugh. At least CUR meant well. At least Fall down went away. This guy? He does nothing here, and I have no compunction about treating him unfairly, especially knowing that any effects won't ever last for more than 10 minutes. How you doin, BTW? P-Foster (talk) 03:25, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
Fair enough I suppose. I would have to disagree with you that he adds nothing to the site - he is great fun to poke every now and again. He always takes the bait and it is amusing to see how many non sequiturs he can fit within every argument. In any case I don't think he does any long term damage to the place. I am doing pretty well these days, although I am looking for a job at the moment before I go finish my studies - I hate being unemployed! --DamoHi 03:37, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Was there any good reason for deleting the "Einsteinian gravitation for poets"?[edit]

Hi P-Foster, even if you don't care about poets there seems to be no good reason for keeping also other mathematically challenged people without a chance of learning gravitation. Was it too difficult for you? Why didn't you ask just for lowering the level a bit so you could understand it too instead of deleting it completely. JimJast (talk) 20:38, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

There was an extensive discussion on the talk page of the essay. Blue (pester) 20:44, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Block[edit]

Check out the IP's block log. History of crap. Though, I suppose blocking for a day is irrelevant as the last time the IP edited was in July. – Nick Heer 03:44, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

that word doesn't mean what you think it means[edit]

[4] I mean, really, this is the 21st century. But, if you find it offensive, then I suppose I can refrain form its use on RW.--Brxbrx (talk) 04:32, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

That sort of thing is why political-correctness is such bullshit; as several of the commentators noted, words are just sound and fury, and it is the intent that matters.
On the other hand, there are far more accurate terms to use when describing the antics of a vandal or troll. Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 04:42, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
Intent and effect can each matter a great deal, depending on the situation. And in this case, the effect was the perception of a homophobic slur. Also, LX, what the fuck? Words don't matter? Blue (is useful) 04:50, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
No; if you are trying to say something, the specific words you use to get it across are of little consequence. Also, people cannot properly be held responsible for how certain oversensitive dingbats interpret their words, as opposed to things that they actually intended to say. Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 05:11, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
Brxbrx - This word is used to dehumanize a specific group of people. Which doesn't include you. You've never had it used on you as a weapon, so why does it fall to you to say 'this is fine to use now'? And Dan Savage's post there is not about 4chan/ED slang - it is, ironically, about the meaning of the word you are apparently denying, but in a non-pejorative context. Mei III (talk) 04:52, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
Really? What does it mean then? Why would, say, "idiocy" not have been a completely suitable term in the situation? I'll tell you what. When that word ceases to be a prelude to beatings or worse, I'll withdraw my comment. Until then, try and be a little more creative. P-Foster (talk) 04:53, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
Forgive me, in the context I'm used to using it, faggot does not refer to homosexuals. I can understand why the word evokes unpleasant emotions in some people, and I generally have a rule that forbids me from doing things around people that may be affected by such things (I like to see political correctness as a question of politeness, as opposed to politics); on occasion, however, I forget myself. I have no prejudice or hatred towards gays, in fact, my uncle is gay, and I happen to be quite fond of him and his boyfriend. So, excluding this post, I will no longer say faggot or any of its derived terms on rationalwiki, because I do not wish to offend.--Brxbrx (talk) 05:39, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Necessary Necromancy[edit]

I used capitals in the section title just for you :) Anyways, I found this, on Dan Savage's blog, and I think that it beautifully explains the point I was trying to make. Sort of. I mean, I was using "fag" in a derogatory fashion. But this video I found to be quite inspiring and heart-warming, as well as relevant to our spats over the use of the word here on RationalWiki.--User:Brxbrx/sig 20:22, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

You're a foreign language teacher who thinks it's okay to make fun of people for their accents. Awesome. Do you also give different tests to the boys and the girls? P-Foster (talk) 03:27, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
also, unless you're a Native American, at some point someone who ultimately produced you came here and spewed their shit. That's the way it works here. P-Foster (talk) 03:29, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

When people carelessly say things that make them look like bigots, yes I do. Why don't you come here and make fun of my accent. Should be good for a laugh. P-Foster (talk) 03:38, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
Na, not careless. I just hate stupid people and I hate when people like you feel the urge to somehow be a superhero and save the day by calling people out with differing views. Really superman- you're not doing the world justice by bitching at me. I am all for immigration- but not stupid people. I just said the accent was annoying. Rationalize, I cannot locate what you are talking about, but mocking an accent is, to my mind, hitting a little below the belt; the s***-spewing is the part you should be focusing on. Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 04:11, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
You make a good point. But will Orly Taitz change if we focus on the substance? For her, No. So therefore will it make a difference? No. So again, preaching to the choir. May have been hypocritical on my part, but it's annoying for an annoying person. Rationalize (talk) 04:32, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
in all fairness, her accent is annoying as hell. And I can't stop thinking that she might be a tranny. I think it's because of the wig. She's either a tranny or a cancer survivor. Shame on me either way for mocking her :)--brxbrx-brxbrx 04:38, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
Useless speech time. "Tranny" is a highly pejorative term in the LGBT community. It has been compared to the word "nigger" for black people in recent years, and is generally as bad as or worse than "fag." Just in case you're ever in a situation where you might have inadvertently pissed someone off, you may want to heed this... Blue (is useful) 06:05, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
I do not personally find her accent annoying, but I suppose some would say I have been desensitized by spending a lot of time around people with foreign accents. Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 04:45, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Why did you delete my article Theories of religions? It was not copied from Citizendium but from Conservapedia. I originally wrote it on Wikipedia. Andries (talk) 16:03, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the crat thing[edit]

I'll have you know that I'm a complete techno-noob and don't know if I could do anything untoward with my cratship rights. But even if I could, I won't, because I understand there is a lot resting on whether I abuse them and I assure you I will not. Instead I will campaign for a libertarian blocking policy (This idea of arbitrarily blocking site dissidents is insane and it will not stand) So if the new mod position is going to be elected, I'm going to run, and I'm going to fight for a fair and old syle blocking police where site critics will have the protection of the law. This website will no longer resemble the interregnum between the death of Julius Caesar and the Emperorship of the God Augustus. Instead it will return to the Republic of the old days, replete with liberty, virtue, and manly dignity.

Thank you for taking a stand against the authoritarianism now prevalant on this site. I think we can beat the aspies if we try hard enough. MarcusCicero (talk) 21:13, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

Seeing as I recall you calling me an aspie on moar than one occasion, I'm not sure how to take that last bit. I've tried to do my best to avoid the real nastiness that has pervaded the site the past couple of weeks; moreover, I'm in a real research/work crunch right now, away from home, and don't really have the time for the wiki for the next little while. But the community means a lot to me, and I'd hate to see it fall apart. I'm not sure if this whole mess is a new-guard-vs-old-guard thing, a question of needing to adjust to a big growth spurt, or the result of longstanding simmering tensions, but it sucks.
You can be a troll and a horrible a-hole when you feel like it, but at the end of the day I think you have a positive vision for what a diverse collection of smart free-thinkers with a good sense of humour could accomplish with a project such as this, and I respect you for at least that much. I'll be around a bit, and hopefully this place can live up to its potential. P-Foster (talk) 21:22, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Good vision, P-Foster. It may be the only redeeming quality you have, but it's a good one. You still generally disgust me and still I vow that you will rue the various days on which you crossed me. Occasionaluse (talk) 21:25, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

1. To fuck with you, as always. 2. Cratting you was not really a popular decision decision with quite a few folks, I think. 3. there's going to be a revamping of user rights anyways, so the point is moot. 4. Did I mention fucking with you? 5. You weren't using the powers anyways. 6. Too much suspected trollery/sockpuppetry going on around here. P-Foster (talk) 22:33, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
I had a big post lined up but some idiot decided to block me to prove a point. Fact is that Mark Antony is in fact an establishment member (Probably EddyP) who wants to make the troll question front and forward the biggest issue in RW 3.0 (Basically when Trent introduces the draconian new powers he will issue by fiat) I never abused the crat powers you granted me and I think you shouldn't have caved into the pressure of the authoritarian faction which threatens to become the ascendant one on this website. MarcusCicero (talk) 22:39, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
So, do you make edits like this because I took away your cratship, or did I take away your cratship because you make edits like that? It's so hard to tell these days. P-Foster (talk) 23:53, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

Block 2[edit]

It may have been a mistake to block this user, I think he was new to wikis and was just experimenting. It may be better in such cases to warn the user and block only if behaviour persists. Blocking users may put them off editing wikis and put them off our aims and ideals. I've made mistakes like that too but I hope I've learnt better. Proxima Centauri (talk) 18:02, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Proxima, are you serious? Look at the diff. I know you haven't been around much lately, but someone has been doing that exact same stunt on archived pages, often, for months now. Unblock if you want, it really doesn't matter, but it's trollery, pure and simple. P-Foster (talk) 18:20, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
(ec) No, it's a spambot/vandalbot that's been targeting us lately. It reappeared the moment I disabled captchas (we had to enable them for all anon edits because of this), and now that I've reenabled them it's gone again. -- Nx / talk 18:21, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

What I sometimes do at Liberapedia is to develop an article that has been vandalised by vandals that know how to evade a block. Showing them that vandalism just makes whatever they don't like get bigger is usually a deterrent. Proxima Centauri (talk) 12:31, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Because...[edit]

In Argentina, they are notorious to eat lots and lots of meat. You said if the world ate as much meat as the USA there would be environmental problems, or something like that. I dispute that, and wanted to mention that Argentinians eat lots of meat, especially red meat. I heard, however, that stomach cancer is higher there for that reason, but I am not sure. RatMaster háblame 12:11, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

1. Is that universally the case in Argentina -- do the peasants eat as much meat as people who live in the city? do the poor eat as much meat as the rich? 2. I didn't say "the USA." I said "America." Argentina is in America. 3. Argentina isn't that big of a country. If India or China or sub-Saharan Africa were to start eating as much meat as Americans, it would be unsustainable. In short, I give your counter-argument a D-. P-Foster (talk) 12:34, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
Eating meat in Argentina is a cultural thing, not a social class thing. And the way you used America implied the USA. RatMaster háblame 16:32, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

Vandal bin vs. block[edit]

The vandal bin did not work in stopping Aswh1, which was why he was blocked. Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 05:18, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

He kept using his few remaining edits to vandalize pages. Some of it was regularly overlooked, and it got extremely tedious to check all of his contributions for ones that hadn't been reverted yet. If a user does nothing but vandalize, and literally all of his contributions have to be manually reverted, might as well block him indefinitely. Röstigraben (talk) 05:22, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
EC -- ListenerX -- Did it "not work" in terms of he found a way to circumvent the editing rate, or did it "not work" in terms of somehow with our vast number of sysops it was impossible to undo a single silly edit every 1/2 hour or so? Rostrigraben, what you are proposing is a radical change to our site's standards. We've typically reverted wandalism and binned the offender. P-Foster (talk) 05:27, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
As I said, it did not work in that some of his edits kept getting overlooked, and they were all idiotic vandalism. I agree that the bin ususally works, but this one was persistent and used his few editing opportunities not to appeal the bin, but just to insert more of his crap. What good is it having someone around who keeps vandalizing pages, never makes any serious comment or edit, and has everything they do reverted on sight anyway, just so we can say "oh, we don't issue indefinite blocks!" Does that make any sense? Röstigraben (talk) 05:35, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
(EC) The intended purpose of the bin is to deter vandals by making quick sprees impossible. If a binned user continues to vandalize, the bin is not functioning as intended. Also, the bin is made somewhat redundant by the extension allowing users to edit their own talk-pages.
As to the length of the block, three months is fine. Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 05:39, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
If it's just about avoiding indefinite blocks (instead of not blocking vandals at all), I'd also be fine with simply reinstating the three-month one. If he comes back to vandalize again, just hit him with another. Röstigraben (talk) 05:49, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
The community standards would seem to favour replacing "months" with "hours." I suggest opening up the discussion to the community at large in a more appropriate forum. P-Foster (talk) 05:50, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
I suggest re-instating the previous three-month block, which was unilaterally removed. If we find it necessary to coop a vandal who does not even bother to protest being binned and/or blocked, we should wait until the moderators are installed. Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 06:10, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
(EC)A block of a few hours would be the functional equivalent of the vandal brake, that won't stop someone who's as persistent as this guy. But you're right that this would entail changing the standards, so I'll open a discussion there. Röstigraben (talk) 06:12, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Was Aswh1's block in May not discussed? Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 06:18, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
No, sorry - I read just now that I was supposed to do that. So what do we do, simply open a coop case and get confirmation for a long-term block? Röstigraben (talk) 06:33, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Yes; by all means let the vandal be cooped. Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 06:38, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the comment[edit]

Thanks for the comment (on the Weston Price article I assume). The main reason I created the article is because the way the material is handled on the skeptic side of the fence is totally horrid. Instead of using relevant points (the apparent acceptance of no evidence for focal infection theory in 1939 and the particular nutritional nature of 1920s and 1930s food) we get claims made about the man's work that are as untrue as the stuff that uses (or rather misuses) his work.--BruceGrubb (talk) 16:01, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

I gotta go with human, a bit here, Bruce, that as written our article is still a mess. I've no idea who this guy is, or really what is the problem from teh actual article. i got most of it from the talk page. hope you do get a chance to really make it useful as you see it. :-)--Pink mowse.pngEn attendant Godot 16:09, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
I just did a sizable overhaul of the article as well as an insane info dump on the talk page. It still needs some work but it should be a little clearer as to what is going on.--BruceGrubb (talk) 18:09, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

going back several edits[edit]

I noticed you reverted changes on deadliest warrior. how do you go back several posts at once like you did? I know how to undo, but only one "saved" change at a time.--Pink mowse.pngEn attendant Godot 20:22, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

Go back through the history to the one you like, go to the edit tab. it'll tell you you're editing an out-of-date version, which is what you want. Don't change anything, hit save, and voila -- you undo as many edits in the history as have happened since the last good one. P-FosterCan't we talk about this, baby?Moderator 20:27, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
Cool. and do you know what teh difference between "undo" and "rollback" are, and if one is prefered over the other (assuming, for example, one keeps a different set of meta data).--Pink mowse.pngEn attendant Godot 20:29, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
With rollback, you don't have to save, and the previous edit disappears from RC -- I think that's the big diff.P-FosterCan't we talk about this, baby?Moderator 20:33, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
Rollback is just a quicker way of undoing all the last edits of the same user. You can't supply a reason though, so it's best to only use it when reverting obvious vandalism. What P-Foster is referring to (disappearing from RC) is bot rollback, which marks the reverted edits and the reversion itself as bot edits, hiding them from RC (unless you click show bot edits). It's perfect against attention-whoring wandalism and trolling. -- Nx / talk 20:45, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. I generally just used undo, but i see why a bot rollback would be excellent for people who love seeing the damage they do and having it "noticed" with a round of undos.--Pink mowse.pngEn attendant Godot 20:48, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

While it would be nice and all, i'm not convinced RW was needed to find those particular "faults" in andy's page. I've seen the exact same commentary around the net, not just here. RevisionDelete[edit]

You don't need to hide the edit comment unless it contains inappropriate information. More importantly, you should only hide the username/IP if the username/IP needs hiding, otherwise it's counter-productive, since it removes the edit from the user's contributions page. Also, since everyone and their dog is a sysop, merely deleting a revision doesn't really help. You are a moderator, so you can hide the revision from sysops, so that only moderators can see it. This is recorded in the suppression log, which doesn't show up on recent changes, so you should first delete the revision without ticking the "suppress data from administrators" box, then tick the box and click apply again. -- Nx / talk 20:46, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
