Look at the member list for such entities as the Commission on Human Rights and it's apparent that there is a fundamental flaw in the U.N. management of such things: they have no standards, which is directly a result of having no enforcement power. Which is in large part because the biggest countries in the world flout the UN routinely, because for decades the world's only superpower has either puppeteered it or ignored it when inconvenient. I had the same problem some time ago, I couldn't receive any email sent through the wiki software (RationalWiki's or otherwise) and changing the email account wouldn't work. Eventually it fixed itself. NightFlare 05:03, 21 April 2009 (EDT)

When we went to the server in the potted plant next to Trent's desk, we had no mail function because it requires a working SMTP thing on the wiki's server. Trent eventually got something running, but I think it's a bit buggy - if it works at all. ħuman 16:53, 21 April 2009 (EDT)

The hostname on the server was incorrect. It was using RationalWiki as the hostname, i.e. it was sending email as www-data at rationalwiki, which isn't a valid email address. The malformed email address might have been rejected by some servers. Also, sendmail (the program that sends mail - Captain Obvious) always tried to figure out the fully qualified domain name before sending mail, and gave up after a timeout, causing some delay (sending mail still worked though). I've fixed it so sendmail now sends email as www-data at rationalwiki.com, a valid email address. --  Nx/talk  17:04, 21 April 2009 (EDT)

(outdent)This is a real shame, as he's one of the very few people who has raised the profile of science and even make it exciting. And all this from a man who has been immobile for most of his adult life.

About 10 years ago, when I was about to start a PhD in relativity theory, I went down to Cambridge with my supervisor to see Hawkin give a lecture. The lecture lasted about 40 minutes, all pre-recorded on his speech software. The funny thing is that when you see him on TV, they cut together shots of him tapping away on his keypad and talking simultaneously, but that's not how it happens in reality. At the end of the lecture, one of the students asked him a question, and Prof Hawkin started tapping out his reply. We all sat there patiently in respectful silence while the great man tapped away, but after nearly 15 minutes we were starting to shift uncomfortably in our seats. Then, finally, the reply came, which lasted less than a minute. And then you realise just what obstacles this man has to hurdle just to get by from day to day. Bondurant 04:34, 21 April 2009 (EDT)
