cap shabat tu[edit]

since they started 403 blocking at cp, can you maek the bot capture on wigo talk? — Sincerely, Neveruse513 / Talk / Block 19:57, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

It already does, you just need to put <capture></capture> around the link. - π 01:44, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
And Trent needs to fix the botserver, until then it will only work while I'm online. -- Nx / talk 08:18, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

WIGO world[edit]

Hi Nx someone was stuffed up WIGO world and we had several entires in the 9700s can you clear them please? - π 01:40, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Inter-wiki links[edit]

I probably should have just put this question here in the first place. --Edgerunner76Your views are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter 13:53, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Meh[edit]

You're a bad man for sending POST requests with GET variables, Apache is a bad man for accepting such malformed requests, and MediaWiki is a bad man for not distinguishing between POST and GET variables. That is all. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 20:32, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

No, I'm just lazy. -- Nx / talk 20:33, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Argh.[edit]

I just noticed that mediawiki strips the name attribute from any HTML you care to input, which was why I had so much pain getting my javascript to work. Any chance of configuring mediawiki to accept name attributes on div elements? Is that doable? --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 23:42, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Div is not supposed to have name attributes, so the sanitizer strips it out. Why not use id or classes? -- Nx / talk 23:51, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Any attribute can have a name attr, I'm reasonably sure I remember that from the NN4 days when I actually wrote serious javascript. IDs are supposed to be globally unique, so that'd be a abuse. I suppose I could use class, but I really want class to be reserved for specifying, for want of a better word, the object's class. So, key is an instance of room object and such like. Even that's pretty abusive, despite the semantic web weenies trying to legitimise it. I suppose abusing ID may be the best/only option. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 00:10, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Not in HTML4. This is what the sanitizer references, and name isn't among the allowed attributes. HTML4 still allows it for some tags (e.g. a), but not div. -- Nx / talk 00:23, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

I fully admit I was too emotional in my response to Proxima Centauri's abysmal writing. I didn't mean to step on your toes but I did. Do what you think is best. Vandal bin[edit]

I just noticed that users who have bin placed in the vandal bin can still have "autoconfirmed" level rights. Perhaps this could be looked into, or is this intentional? --The Emperor Kneel before Zod! 15:32, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Not really intentional, but I think removing their "autoconfirmed" level when binning probably wouldn't work (most likely they'd get it back the next time mediawiki decides to check if they satisfy the requirements). To counter this, the bin prevents page moves completely for binned users. -- Nx / talk 15:46, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Yes. -- Nx / talk 19:28, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
Right. Which methods do I use for this? I'm currently working it out by grepping for likely phrases but I wondered if you knew how to do it. Evil evil Hoover! 19:32, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
Do I understand correctly that you already have an xml dump and are running grep on it? -- Nx / talk 19:38, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
Nope; I'm running grep on the PWB source to see if I can find how to do things like export and then import categories, then perform repetitive edits on the imported pages. Evil evil Hoover! 19:41, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
I don't know what you're trying to do, but you can get an xml dump using Special:Export. From a bot, you would get the source of a page using wikipedia.Page.get. You probably don't need import, just edit the page using wikipedia.Page.put. Search for "class Page" (without quotation marks) in wikipedia.py -- Nx / talk 19:51, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

Irrational Number rights[edit]

Can we give Irrational Numbers article deletion rights, so that Pi doesn't have to ask other people to delete articles?Punky Your mental puke relief 06:21, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Sysops is the only group with vaporise. - π 07:02, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
On the other hand, we could use the bigdelete right to restrict sysops to deleting only pages with less than say 4700 revisions. -- Nx / talk 07:04, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
Why 4,700? - π 07:05, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
Because it will keep you under his heel? Anyway, aresn't you a spop, PiGuy? ħumanUser talk:Human 07:08, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
Would a page that has had over 2000 edits ever be deleted anyway? All our mainspace articles have less than 1000 edits -- Nx / talk 07:16, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
A thousand sounds like a good benchmark then. Didn't Wikipedia have it set at 500 at one time? - π 07:21, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
No, I gave up my rights when there was a big teary fight over at the Saloon bar about sysops and who should and shouldn't be bureaucrats, it seemed completely pointless. I asked Nx to create me a group that had the few things I actually needed. - π 07:10, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
Ah, I think I remember that. It was mostly so your edits wouldn't have red check marks, IIRC. Well, other than why you wanted to be sort of undone. What we should have is a "post-crat" set of rights where we are "trusted" but don't have any harmful powers, for elder statemen/women/irrationals such as yourself. Just trying to prepare for my golden days, here. PS, what's the RW pension plan like? I never looked into it... ħumanUser talk:Human 07:14, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

$wgGroupPermissions['Irrational_numbers']['undelete']= true;

to the magic table, please? - π 00:46, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Whine, whine, whine. Why not just take all your old rights back so Nx can take a day off?Punky Your mental puke relief 00:49, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
Because the only rights that are useful are the ones that I use. I am mostly just sick of the way people carry on like they are important, we call it demotion and act like it is nothing, but people fight over who should be sysops and crats when it is suppose to be unimportant. I want just the things I use. When was the last time you used the import page right? - π 00:56, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
I see your point. Mind you, Π, that most of what I sling around is sarcasm and tongue-in-cheek humor, so don't be offended. The Spikey Punk I'm punking my punk! 00:59, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
That's okay I am not. Actual I can't even see what gave you that impression, other than maybe the import thing. But seriously why do we have that, Nx used it once? - π 01:05, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
It's the default setting. -- Nx / talk 08:04, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for giving me my vaporise button back. I know import pages is a default, but it really only seems useful if you are forking a wiki. - π 10:05, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Yet another annoying request[edit]

Could you install the input box extension, please? There are a few things I would like to use it for. - π 03:20, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

To do one of the things I was hoping to do we need this as well apparently. If it is not too much trouble, can you install it as well, please? - π 07:43, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
I don't think we have the resources to run it, sorry. Our database dump is 11 gigs; the doc says the index is usually 3-5x smaller than that, and that you need to keep at least half of the index in memory for this to work. -- Nx / talk 09:34, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Damn. Oh well, one day when we get up to a 350 server cluster like Wikipedia. Can you think of a way of searching by prefixes? - π 09:39, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
I modified the MySQL query in the default search engine. It was pretty easy, although it's a bit different than what inputbox does (use namespace= for the namespace, and prefix=<page name without namespace>): http://rationalwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&ns3=1&search=bot&fulltext=Advanced+search&prefix=Π
I hope I didn't break anything. -- Nx / talk 10:48, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Awesome. So if you are using the default search sort it will work? I had to resave mine with all boxes ticked. - π 10:55, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
You have to select the namespace, and use the page name without namespace, i.e. {{PAGENAME}}. The namespace parameter in inputbox isn't working. -- Nx / talk 10:57, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for all that. - π 11:01, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
By the way is there something wrong with the irrational numbers group? I can delete and edit MediaWiki, but I can't restore or edit protected pages. - π 11:03, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
You didn't have editprotected. -- Nx / talk 11:05, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. I have fixed it so you can search the saloon bar as well, it needed {{PAGENAMEE}}. - π 11:09, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
That breaks your talkpage. I'll fix this in the code. -- Nx / talk 11:21, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
It breaks on my talkpage because it searches %25C0%25A0 instead of %C0%A0. I would rather it works on the Saloon bar and Tech support than my talkpage. - π 11:22, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
I would rather it works on all three :) -- Nx / talk 11:26, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Should we go back to {{PAGENAMEE}} as that uses the url? - π 11:27, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
no, because the database doesn't store it urlencoded. -- Nx / talk 11:32, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
It works, well done. Thanks for all this. I know it is a lot of work and we all ask so much of you, but you do such a great job. - π 11:35, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Idea: Can those "create article" magic buttons also add the basic templates and/or categories in the edit box? (cross posted from the saloon to get your attention) ħumanUser talk:Human 00:09, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Yes, that's possible with vanilla mediawiki (although the inputbox makes it more convenient). See mediawikiwiki:Manual:Creating pages with preloaded text.
This inputbox will copy the contents of Theodore Roosevelt into the new article:

-- Nx / talk 00:19, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Just auto-add "Footnotes", "<references>", "See Also" & "External links" is what I think H means. So the preload would be a "template" page with those items on. I am eating Toast& honeychat 00:34, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Not just that, not even that. What I meant was on, say "debate", it adds (where's that fucking nowiki button below!?) {{debate}}, etc. Considering recipes, debates, and essays usually don't have what Susan said, the template is all I meant. However, if you make a magic mainspace article creator machine, what Suze said would be cool. ħumanUser talk:Human 01:16, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
All you need is a page with {{debate}} on it. - π 01:19, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
We're reaching the height of laziness if we need the basic headers put in automatically... although it may work well for reminding people to "finish them" with refs and cats particularly. Scarlet A.pngd hominem 01:24, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
You would be amazed at people's inability to follow instructions, e.g, me not reading all of the inputbox's. - π 01:25, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
It's not about "lazy" - it's about how cool we can be. Actually, the computer programmer's rule is to make future work as easy as possible - just as the machinist's is, and the industrial engineer's. Wake up, press "go" ... ... profit! Is the ideal. ħumanUser talk:Human 04:48, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
I will play with it then, see if can make it happen. - π 04:49, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Okay, I have done essay, recipe and the To do list ones as well. - π 05:44, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

BN[edit]

Couldn't I make a fix for the permissions problem by creating a php file containing

<?php
exec("chmod -R a+rx bnw/images")
?>

? Evil evil Hoover! 20:00, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

execing might not work, plus php has a chmod function and you can even change the umask. But it would be better to try .profile first or ask your host. -- Nx / talk 08:51, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
.profile won't work because I cannot write ~ or the parent directory of public_html; asking the hosts seems more like a last resort. Evil evil Hoover! 19:10, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
Well, a trivial fix would be to edit mediawiki's upload function and add a temporary umask change. Php suggests not using umask as it can lead to concurrency problems. -- Nx / talk 19:12, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
...can you give me a patch for that? Evil evil Hoover! 19:21, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
There's an example of what you need to do at the umask documentation page I linked above. The function that creates directories is in GlobalFunctions.php, called wfMkdirParents. something like this should do:
$old = umask(0);
$retval = mkdir( $dir, $mode, true ) && chmod( $dir, $mode );
umask($old);
return $retval;
No guarantee that this won't make your host angry. Or that it'll work at all. -- Nx / talk 19:27, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Where did all that Mei come from? Didn't calibrating the bot take about as much time as replacing the Mei links manually wouldve? -- =w= 22:13, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

No. The first phase was python replace.py -search:"Mei" "[[Mei" "[[User:Mei", but it didn't search in some namespaces, so I had to create the links on my sandbox ({{subst:#dpl:linksto:Mei}}) and run python replace.py -links:User:Nx/sandbox3 "[[Mei" "[[User:Mei" -- Nx / talk 22:17, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

T___T[edit]

Sorry sorrysorry. Sorry. -- =w= 23:18, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

Do you want to test out my userbox? -- =w= 23:18, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
Yei thanks! *hugs/kisses* I'd've noticed sooner if it weren't for your odd subpages :-( -- =w= 00:19, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
Odd? It makes it easier to organize things. -- Nx / talk 00:22, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
Sure but it makes if difficulter for Mei to see where things are. In conclusion: thank you for your support /uncle sam -- =w= 00:27, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

fMRI data[edit]

You should have a file (data.tar.gz) in your directory on RW that has an anat scan, dicom format. Let me know if there are any issues or questions. tmtoulouse 00:56, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

No no no. Same colors ("pink"), lower brightness. What are you using anyway? -- =w= 03:52, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Ratibunk wuju.PNG

So I choose to harass you. Can you place the image on the side so it is on my page, similar to that of the logo on the Dive Bar? ĵ₳¥ášÇ♠ʘ Give a man a face, and he will say what you want to hear. Give him a mask, and he will say what he wants 23:20, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Thank you very much, I do like the way it looks. Just one more question, how does the white space become see through? If that is possible, it would be deeply appreciated, if not, well, thanks for what you have done so far. Have a great day. Javasca₧ My computer has two mowses! 23:27, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
You'll need to use PNG. Jpeg doesn't support transparency. -- Nx / talk 23:28, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Meifly[edit]

Mei would like to request a simliar logo switch. But with this image on her userpage/talkpage? Thank you for your attention. -- =w= 23:30, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

People are going to bitch about cluttering up Common.css with all kinds of personal stuff again. -- Nx / talk 23:32, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
Maybe we could put in something that allows for customisation without needing you to edit the code every time. -- =w= 23:33, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
I've tried, it can't be done. The css section of an html document is not saved in the parser cache, so it per-page css wouldn't work when the page is served from the cache -- Nx / talk 23:35, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
Let's just keep quiet and hope no more people ask for things. /crossfingers -- =w= 23:41, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for sorting out my code anyway (you & java). Expect many Mei Coupons. -- =w= 23:48, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
