Present tense

Why do historians use the present tense when talking about the past:

"Harold wins at Stamford Bridge and then marches to Hastings ..." etc.

It's a question of personal writing style, really, I guess mostly to make the events seem more immediate or immersive or something like that. I think most historians write in the past tense, though. --AKjeldsen^{Cum dissensie} 11:29, 6 January 2009 (EST)

The present tense is also sometimes used in story telling and for the reasons AKjeldsen says. Jokes are very often told in the present for that reason too. Not that I'm suggesting that history is a joke. Film and book reviews are frequently (at least in part) in the present. So the present isn't that unusual.
