What the fuck are you talking about?

It's the second quote before the novella begins.

  1. To Bob Geiger, for reasons that need not be explained here -- and to Bob Dylan, for Mister Tambourine Man
  2. "He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man." -- Dr. Johnson

--Robledo 18:57, 11 September 2008 (EDT)

Not in my copy. So fuck you. Ace McWickedwhisky 19:15, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
So you've got a non-standard copy. Bad luck. They even included the Johnson quote in the titles of the movie, f'fuck's sake. Have the good grace to be just the tiniest bit embarrassed. --Robledo 19:48, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
I know it was in the movie. But I dont do embarrased. I do angry, happy, sarcastic, humourous, pissed off, livid and shameful but not embarrased. Ace McWickedwhisky 19:50, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
That's super. And why, pray tell, do you think it was in the movie? --Robledo 20:17, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
I seem to remember a scene where the highway patrolman asks for a kiss. That wasnt in the book. Ace McWickedwhisky 20:31, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
F&L in LV? That was one of the many high points of the film... ħumanUser talk:Human 20:40, 11 September 2008 (EDT)

That scene wasn't in the book and I recall reading somewhere that HST didn't like that scene. Ace McWickedwhisky 20:54, 11 September 2008 (EDT)

I didn't care if he liked it, I did. Films always have to add and subtract material in the transisition (ok, almost always). See: Naked Lunch... ħumanUser talk:Human 21:04, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
Well F&L is pretty close to the book, in fact, almost exactly the same. What many people dont know is that F&L in reality took place over a fortnight. The bike race one weekend, Thompson returns to LA then goes to the sheriffs convention a couple of weeks later. Aimless trivia. Ace McWickedwhisky 21:06, 11 September 2008 (EDT)

Fuckhead threshold exceeded

Let's try this:

  1. The Johnson quote is in my book.
  2. We can reasonably infer that it was in the book used as the source for the screenplay.
  3. It was certainly in this guy's book.
  4. This guy's, too!
  5. I particularly like this one:

The whole mad adventure, illustrated with Ralph Steadman's grotesquely hilarious drawings, achieves an unexpected poignancy as an illustration of the book's epigraph, from Samuel Johnson: "He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man." [1]

It's probably just as well you don't do embarrassed, Ace. --Robledo 20:41, 12 September 2008 (EDT)

Whats your fucking problem? Are we trying to prove something? Did you wake up this morning and think "I'll show that Ace"? Good god man has this become your cause célèbre. Wtf new poll puts labour almost equal with the nats

I just heard a new poll on the radio has labour at 37% and national at 40% (and even scarier NZ first at 5%). This poll is bogus right?DamoHi 22:12, 9 October 2008 (EDT)

Remember dude that Peters was cleared by the SFO. Ace McWickedThe Liquid Room 02:20, 10 October 2008 (EDT)
Yeah but are there 1 in 20 people stupid enough to vote for him? I have seen Winston come back from the dead the last 3(4?) elections but not this time surely not. And if he does its probably Aunty Helen for three more years.DamoHi 03:47, 10 October 2008 (EDT)
Funny story about Peters. I was at dinner with Winston Peters, Turiana whats-her-name, some big lawyer types and a few TVNZ CEO's at this really expensive resturant in Wellington. It was like a banquet of Italian foods, wine, whiskys and cigars. Masses of food and Winston helped himself to a large portion. At the end of the stupendous meal and drinking session the whole thing went on a TVNZ corporate credit card. Not one week later I was sitting at my desk and there was an article in the NZ Herald that stated that Winston was calling for a full inquiry into how TVNZ CEO's were spending taxpayers money on fancy dinners and the like. I remember thinking "Fuck Winston, they are spending it on YOU!". Now that shows the mans real character. Ace McWickedThe Liquid Room 06:29, 10 October 2008 (EDT)
And now he's saying TVNZ have it in for him. Man he is the master politician - reminds me a bit of LBJ (if you haven't read "master of the senate") read it asap. IMO it's the greatest political autobiography ever written and ever will be until the author writes about LBJ's years as president.--DamoHi 16:47, 10 October 2008 (EDT)
One in twenty is all it takes, sometimes, it seems. Look at our USinsanity this decade... And LBJ is an awesome story in politics, in so many ways. Did not check the link, but I think it the person who is doing a four/five volume history of Johnson? It's a must-own/must-read (where can I get my free copies?). ħumanUser talk:Human 03:28, 11 October 2008 (EDT)
LBJ was a masterful politician. He singlehandedly controlled every political institution he was a part of whether it was at university, in the little congress (when he was an intern) the democratic party campaign finance committee, the senate and finally ended up being president even though the collective wisdom was that no southerner could ever be president. Robert Caro is the author and he's written 3 books thus far and they are all brilliant, but the one I recommend the most is "master of the senate" because it explains how the senate really worked, all the backdoor deals and promises and the absolute ruthlessness of LBJ's quest for power. After reading it you will be filled with mixed emotions about him, great man, great politician and he had some worthwhile ideas for society (esp in racial matters) but what a lying, conniving, backstabbing, ruthless BASTARD. You won't be aware of this Human but we have a guy called Winston Peters who imo has no principles or redeeming features who manages to get into parliament every time byharping on and on about crime, immigration and appealing to the elderly. It is sickening because it looks like he'll be getting back in and will probably be kingmaker again in a coalition govt. Kinda reminds me of LBJ in a perverse sort of way. --DamoHi 04:12, 11 October 2008 (EDT)
Ps don't be so cheap - fork out 30 pounds for the book - you won't be able to sleep once you start reading it its so well written.--DamoHi 04:12, 11 October 2008 (EDT)

Labour might win... and you think that's a bad thing? And yeah, the few times I've met Winston (more bumped into, really, we didn't actually converse at length) he has been a complete racist asshole. Can we get a decent kingmaker party? Wazza (Not Wazzock, Wazza)Approach the Presence 09:00, 11 October 2008 (EDT)

Dunno actually I am a genuinely undecided voter. I have always been a labour supporter but I can't stand Helen Clark. I wonder if its time for a change, though I am not convinced that National has really become a moderate centre right party like they say they have become. I am afraid that below the surface there is a radical agenda just simmering below the surface. Maybe I'll vote progressive tis time - I've always liked Jim AndertonDamoHi 16:23, 11 October 2008 (EDT)
I've always liked Helen Clark. She's a ballbreaker, sure, but she gets a good team around her and she gets stuff done. Compare her to other national leaders and she's pretty good. John Key, on the other hand, apparently wants to privatize everything. Including Kiwibank, because banks aren't meant to be linked to the government even if it's the only bank in the world that's still stable because of its link to the government. Wazza (Not Wazzock, Wazza)Approach the Presence 20:59, 11 October 2008 (EDT)
I did vote Helen Clark first off however in light of recent global events I dont think labour is up to the task. My vote I think will go to Progressives. The Jim Anderton has done good things i.e. Kiwibank. Ace McWickedThe Liquid Room 23:27, 11 October 2008 (EDT)

Any Predictions for tomorrow?

I don't know about you but I am skeptical of the poll results that say National will have enough votes to lead the next government. I wouldn't be surprised if its aunty Helen for another 3 years. --DamoHi 18:13, 6 November 2008 (EST)

Hmmmm its the most lacklustre campaign I have ever seen. The election is tomorrow and I dont know what I am going to do. Not National though, the lost my vote when the said the were going to work with Peter Dunn. Ace McWickedThe Liquid Room 18:28, 6 November 2008 (EST)
I agree with the lacklustre comment. I think the media was more interested in the US one that ours. What's wrong with Dunne? I'd never vote for him and he seems a bit socially conservative for me, but he's not too bad surely. I think I'll go with Progressive though, I can't bring myself to vote for Helen but the alternative is probably worse. Any chance of Progressives getting more than 1 MP?--DamoHi 18:49, 6 November 2008 (EST)
