Q gospel

The Q gospel (from the German Quelle, meaning source) is a hypothesized collection of sayings of Jesus, and generally accepted to be one of two major sources for the narrative of the synoptic Gospels of the Bible (the other being an early version of the Gospel of Mark). While no longer extant in any recognizable form, Q has been reconstructed, at least in part, based on its use in the Gospels, including the extrabiblical Gospel of Thomas to which it is thought to bear a strong resemblance.

Theologian Burton Mack, a professor of early Christianity at Claremont College, has written extensively on the subject, and has included a reconstruction in his book The Lost Gospel (ISBN 0060653752). However, not all biblical scholars accept the existence of Q, many (but not all) of whom assume that Matthew, not Mark as generally accepted, was the first Gospel written.
