666 is the Number of the Beast in Revelations. It is also associated with the Antichrist.
- 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
- 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
- 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
The number may also be 616, according to recent scholarship.
Scholars tend to believe the number refers to Roman Emperor Nero or to a different Roman Emperor. In Hebrew, letters stand for numbers, and the Latin for “Nero Caesar” can correspond to the number 666 in Hebrew, while the Greek for the name of Emperor Caligula can represent the number 616. The Emperor Domitian's name can also fit into the number 666. as can the name of Ronald Wilson Reagan.
Nero died in 68 CE and no worldwide cataclysm followed. The other Roman Emperors died similarly without the world falling apart.
666 should not be confused with, Sex Sex Sex. The coincidence is in English and not in biblical languages. However, in Latin, 6 6 6 would be read as 'Sex Sex Sex', thereby proving that ancient dudes spoke a better language than you.
