Deletions[edit]

Thanks for deleteing those userboxes pages, I was just going to ask you to delete those, as well as:

'''Alexander Hamilton'''
'''Benjamin Franklin'''
Phyllis Schlalfy
John schlafly
UserPalMD/Credentials

Those are all redirect pages, with no links to them. There's more in the database but that'll do for now. Thanks! --Stevo 12:29, 23 June 2007 (CDT)

Hey, don't delete mine, please...--PalMD-yada yada 12:31, 23 June 2007 (CDT)

You want the redirect? Tmtoulouse 12:33, 23 June 2007 (CDT)
UserPalMD/Credentials should be safe to delete, shouldn't it? it was the page you created before correcting the name by moving it to User:PalMD/Credentials. The latter page won't be deleted. --Stevo 12:35, 23 June 2007 (CDT)

ohhhh...got it.--PalMD-yada yada 12:37, 23 June 2007 (CDT)

Merci! --Stevo 12:50, 23 June 2007 (CDT)

How do you find those, Stevo? I'd take on some of the finding + deletion tasks, if'n I knew what you were doing. --jtltalk 15:52, 23 June 2007 (CDT)
He might have looked under 'all files'/'redirects'? humanbe in 16:42, 23 June 2007 (CDT)
Yeah, well those few were just ones I noticed whilst looking at Special:Allpages. But another thing to do _would_ be to go through Special:Listredirects and check the 'What links here' for each one. I was thinking about doing a scraper to do that, although you'd have to check it because some redirects with no links are needed. But if you could do that easily that would be great! --Stevo 18:01, 23 June 2007 (CDT)

Human's litter box is here[edit]

retirement[edit]

"(I don't see a problem protecting the user page, but per the fact that the talk page is the "communities" I don't thing this should be protected)" - Tmt unprotecting retired user:lulz' talk page.

Hi T, I don't see why they shouldn't be protected. The archive contains all the "community property", and I feel that it is simpler to leave a protected talk page than a potential target for graffiti, grievances after the fact, etc. I reprotected it for now.
But if you think I'm wrong, feel free to school me! humanbe in 16:57, 23 June 2007 (CDT)

You killed Doc![edit]

I think someone deleted Pa-ell-MD instead of Pa-one-MD... Oh, never mind, it was a practice suicide self-pwnage... humanbe in 18:13, 5 July 2007 (CDT)

It was more unintentional suicide than murder.--PalMD-Goatspeed! 18:18, 5 July 2007 (CDT)

Project Whitewash[edit]

Very nice work, T. I cleaned up one or two of the speling and grammarz errors, but still, very well done. I see already from my watchlist that there's already been some beneficial cleanup going on. humanbe in 12:44, 7 July 2007 (CDT)

Just to slow you down a bit there, cowboy, I have two requests - One, when you add the RWify cat to an article, can you try to explain why in its talk page? You're leaving a trail of confused editors in your wake. Two, if an article isn't simply outrageous (like fun:Kirsty Alley), before moving it to ACD, let's discuss in talk. An intelligent article is an asset, even if it's not immediately obvious why we have it. It may serve as a supporting link to other articles, for instance. humanbe in 16:22, 8 July 2007 (CDT)
Since ive been responsible for some of this, I'll help out with that. Nothing is permanent anyway, so will sort it out all together.--PalMD-Goatspeed! 16:39, 8 July 2007 (CDT)

Poemtry[edit]

Should we have a Poetry: namespace? Or just move them to Essay if not in a user space? Or, ask people to confine them to user space? Ideas.... humanbe in 13:02, 7 July 2007 (CDT)

I am thinking user space and essay space should be able to absorb a fair amount of poetry...if however it appears we are getting a lot of it then I think we can consider it. At the moment we are not really under a mountain of it yet. Tmtoulouse 13:07, 7 July 2007 (CDT)

Jezebub Berklee[edit]

You said "Just let him run around with Jeb Berkeley for awhile" and unblocked it. Someone also deleted his talk page. And buried the old history.

I don't understand, really. Do we just throw up our hands if a vandal understands multiple ID's and IP's? humanbe in 17:48, 7 July 2007 (CDT)

The talk page and user page got erased after he moved them and I didnt feel like undoing vandalism he did on his own pages, I can try and get the talk page back. I decided that he was getting more fun out of creating new IDs and that if we backed off and just reverted him for a while he would get bored and go away....if did go away but whether it was my plan or not I have no idea. Tmtoulouse 17:50, 7 July 2007 (CDT)

Extension please[edit]

Can you install RandomSelection please? And if you do, mention you did on Linus' page. Thanks!

How do I test it? Tmtoulouse 21:54, 9 July 2007 (CDT)
Yay! For braking shit repeatedly...but uh is it working? Tmtoulouse 22:03, 9 July 2007 (CDT)
Yay! thank you! Yes, it looks like it's working -- reload Template:RationalWiki Slogan a few times, and the top line should change. --jtltalk 22:17, 9 July 2007 (CDT)
Excellent, thanks T! I can't wait to mess up this whole site with that extension! By the way, we have UC's "stub" template to thank for inspiration and functionality. humanbe in 22:40, 9 July 2007 (CDT)

Sex[edit]

Check out Human_sexuality and its associated cat, Category:Sexuality to see if it clarifies a bit why so many of the sexual/cultural things matter here. (hint, pseudoscience, at least). humanbe in 21:31, 10 July 2007 (CDT)

Talk page link?[edit]

d00d, can you make a fancy sig that includes a link to your talk page, like most of the p1|V|ps on here have? Makes it one click easier to hassle you! humanbe in 21:31, 10 July 2007 (CDT)

All right, I will give in. tmtoulouse plague 22:54, 10 July 2007 (CDT)
Cool... very cool. I hope you put it in a template so it doesn't take up 15 lines every time you sign! By the way, the "weight" parameter is a ratio, no need for it if all are equal. humanbe in 23:05, 10 July 2007 (CDT)
Hmm, should be fixed now. I may changes weights later so leaving them in for now. tmtoulouse plague 23:09, 10 July 2007 (CDT)
Sweet. I forget who I saw using a sig like that, I keep meaning to, to save space for people editing talk pages. humanbe in 00:38, 11 July 2007 (CDT)

May I?[edit]

I have been requested to protect a user's user page here. May I? HeartGold tx 00:02, 24 June 2007 (CDT)

I am going to go ahead and do it, under the assumption that if I am wrong, somebody will undo the mess I make. HeartGold tx 00:08, 24 June 2007 (CDT)
Thanks for the help. Wasn't clear to me. Now it is. It can go to me. HeartGold tx 00:18, 24 June 2007 (CDT)
Also, I agree with most of what you wrote here. HeartGold tx 00:22, 24 June 2007 (CDT)

As you say, if any of us screw up, editors or sysops, others can fix/amend it. You act in good faith and provide links to why you do things, and learn to trust yourself. And to rip yourself a new one if you screw up ;) humanbe in 00:35, 24 June 2007 (CDT)

Experiment?[edit]

Are RW contributors going to be the subject of a paper? HeartGold tx 04:30, 24 June 2007 (CDT)

You mean besides toilet tissue? Wow. CЯacke® 08:13, 24 June 2007 (CDT)
Academic paper. HeartGold tx 12:42, 24 June 2007 (CDT)
Haha, no TP, we use old socks for TP. This question reminds me of a def. added at addictionary.com, a site where people upload concocted neologisms with, hopefully, funny definitions. Someone added "addictionary", the def. was a site where people provide the owners with free jokes so they can eventually write a book using them. Personally, I think CP, or even WP, editors would make a more interesting paper. humanbe in 14:25, 24 June 2007 (CDT)
I've done a couple of papers on WP basically tracing how the software, policies, and people combine to make it what it is. I intend on folding these papers into my dissertation as well. I'll let y'all know when I've dreamt up a sufficiently convoluted title.

here are a few cites, pointing to work by others, if you care to look into it:

There are a few more out there but most of them are sort of how-tos concerning leveraging the WP database in various ways. Have fun. 70.160.54.37 18:07, 24 June 2007 (CDT)

EL at WP[edit]

Oh God, I've seen that. It's one of the reasons why I don't do more on WP: There are complicated rule pages for pretty much everything. It's like the (A)D&D of wikis.

And COI pretty much means I will lose by default, too. I say let them sort it out among themselves; there are rational voices there who may argue for us without fearing COI. And the EL section is WAY at the bottom, and with just one link, it's so tiny most people will overlook it - if they actually bother to scroll past the References and the "See also" section.

The URL is in the LA Times article (though not hyperlinked), so it's not like not having it in the EL section will make it some sort of secret. *shrugs* --Sid 16:13, 24 June 2007 (CDT)

I dont mind playing the WP game for the most part, as long as my opponent isn't a total ass, but what can you do? I will wait and see if someone else bothers to take up the cause. Tmtoulouse 16:16, 24 June 2007 (CDT)
I agree with Sid. ELs at WP don't "help", anyway, since they instruct googlebots not to follow them (ie, it does not increase visibility). We are in the quote, let's not worry about it. And Trent, I'd say drop that fight with whoever it was that was getting all snarky over our content. Perhaps one day we will achive notability and get our own article, and then we'll be in trouble! I do like that he used my homeschoolers "article" as an example of crap here, though! My baby is famous, I'm so proud... humanbe in 16:28, 24 June 2007 (CDT)
Heh, all that WP rule discussion reminds me of working for the Civil Service. ; ) I doubt I have the patience these days to argue with that sort of thing. Trashbat 16:43, 24 June 2007 (CDT)
Oh I know it doesn't really help our site, I am not doing it for that. Its for the principle of the thing, I really think that our site needs an EL link. But like I said, I can't win that battle because of the COI clause and I am not going to turn the conservapedia talk page into a defense of rationalwiki, as much as that would be ironically entertaining. Tmtoulouse 16:45, 24 June 2007 (CDT)
I agree that, by intuition, RW should be listed in the External Links section. Considering that the site gets mentioned in the cited LA Times article and in the WP article, it should be a pretty obvious case. But I got turned off by the sheer length of WP:EL. --Sid 18:18, 24 June 2007 (CDT)

We didn't break anything and it isn't all my fault and you can't prove it and besides that it's fixed now and we'll never do it again. More seriously, whatever drama's there's been has been over at the other place and mostly hidden from view, not over here. HG got a demotion to something like "Director of Constitutional Studies", but that's about it. --jtltalk 20:09, 3 July 2007 (CDT)

JTL didn't break anything and it isn't all his fault and you can't prove it and besides that it's fixed now and he'll never do it again. Argh! Too many guidelines pages...[edit]

Cant't we just keep all discussion to RationalWiki talk:Community Standards and then move things to the article page once they've been worked out? -- Stevo (talk) 13:43, 5 July 2007 (CDT)

I am not opposed to it, the proposed guidelines page was a homology from when RW2.0 first launched. The goal will be to get all of this stuff consolidated to a single place I think. Its just a matter of transitioning it over. Tmtoulouse 13:45, 5 July 2007 (CDT)
Okay, the trick is going to be merging all the discussion from all the article spaces and talk spaces into a single page, and archiving what we don't need anymore. Looks daunting to me...but it probably needs to be done. Tmtoulouse 13:49, 5 July 2007 (CDT)
I'd be happy to take it on -- Stevo (talk) 13:54, 5 July 2007 (CDT)

That did it...thanks.--PalMD-Goatspeed! 18:05, 5 July 2007 (CDT)

If you can turn down that surface temp a bit, you're burning our notes! Why do they call you Helium if you're mostly made of Hydrogen, eh? Embarrassed about your lack of bound neutrons? Hmmm? humanbe in 19:34, 5 July 2007 (CDT)
You mean bound protons. --Linus(plot evil tech) 23:48, 6 July 2007 (CDT)
No, I don't. Check your nuclear chemistry humanbe in 23:58, 6 July 2007 (CDT)
No, see, protons dictate the element. Neutrons dictate what isotope it is. Therefore, a lack of bound protons in helium would be hydrogen, while a lack of bound neutrons in helium would be He3. However, I see what you're driving at: H has no bound neutrons, period. It's just the comparison with helium that I'm taking issue with. --Linus(plot evil tech) 17:53, 7 July 2007 (CDT)
Well, even his helium is probably a little light in the loafers, isotope-wise. The main point is all his neutrons are little sluts, cruising around free of nuclei, at least until they crash into one of his fresh P-P helium things and get stuck in a long term relationship. Eventually maybe he'll blow up and make some heavy metal for us. humanbe in 18:48, 7 July 2007 (CDT)
