So...
So...
what goes godot think of my concept of separating marriage completely so its just religious and unions/blahs be the secular, legal thing? Then its completely on a religious denomination if they want to marry the person should they seek to be "married"
It's how france does it, and I would love it. EAch person / church/ whatever is up to themselves to decide how to label their union. The country has ONLY civil unions.
at the core, i don't care about social discrimination, only state sponsored discrimination. we will always hate, being the humans we are. but i want our legal lives to be as free of discrimination as possible. :-)
so i'd be VERY infavor of that. the only reason Husband and I are married, is because we needed the status for immigration issues both here and in France. otherwise, we see no reason for "marriage" as we are both atheists, and both non-traditionalists. But I find Ace's argument so deeply disingenuous.
"it's the same, it's just a different name". then call it the same thing, and everyoen is equal, right?
Frankly, I don't give a fuck if gay marriage was legal or not as long as the same rights are upheld. Which in NZ they ARE hence I don't feel the need to have a big fucking campaign to change a word.
I get you don't think it's a big deal, but you aren't gay. Seriously, Ace, ask your friends what they think, and I suspect you'll hear a different point of view. It's sure as hell better than what they had, better than what Colorado doesn't have, but i'm such a believer in equality, and it's not equal.
It cant be, if it's separate.
I have gay friends and I haven't heard complaints - and I don't give a fuck if they did complain because, as I said, I don't give a fuck if gay marriage was legal or not as long as the same rights are upheld
As long as you understand that it *is* institutionalized discrimination, and are fine with that. Yes, they have the same rights. Blacks had the same bathrooms. doesn't mean it was all hunky dory...
but I'll drop it.
I can only imagine the legal clusterfuck that would ensue trying to some kind of recognition for my relationship. "You see, Mr. County Clerk, we're very, er, special..."
That's why i like CU's above and beyond all. Two old men, straight as can be, are best friends. they live togother since their wives died, and rely on eachother. They should have the right to say "I want this person to be my legal support system" too.
as should two single moms.
You and your Lady.
Me and my cat. oh wait, he's not consenting. ;-)
A purr is legally binding in most states :-)
