Lyndon Baines Johnson, often referred to as "LBJ", was John F. Kennedy's Vice President. Johnson succeeded Kennedy as President upon the latter's assassination, and subsequently won the office in his own right in 1964. Johnson declined to run for a second full term in 1968 due to his totally mucking up a conflict in Southeast Asia.

Aside from the Viet Nam War, Johnson is most remembered for his Great Society initiative. Unfortunately, because the war used up all his resources, it didn't turn out nearly as well as was hoped, thus guaranteeing endless harping by conservative pundits about the "failures of the welfare state".
