I think it would be something like Romania in the 1970s. Technologically backwards, superstitious and you would never know from one moment to the next whether you might just be grabbed off the streets never to be seen again. --Horace 20:46, 5 May 2008 (EDT)

I won't hazard a suggestion of my own. My knowledge of world history is rather basic—my options would be limited to various points in major western nations' histories. --Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 21:11, 5 May 2008 (EDT)

North Korea. Impoverished, isolationistic, massive propaganda, and a cult of personality around the Great Leader. --Gulik 01:00, 6 May 2008 (EDT)

I'll second North Korea, adding that the current Great Leader's would have been nobody had he not been the son of a previous Great Leader. --SpinyNorman 00:07, 7 July 2008 (EDT)
If fictional countries count, though, then I'd say it's got to be Elbonia, from the Dilbert comic strip.--SpinyNorman 00:07, 7 July 2008 (EDT)

Poland, around the time of World War I, II, III, and 0. Kektklik sock 00:13, 7 July 2008 (EDT)

I was going to say Nicolae Ceauşescu's Romania but I see it's been done. SusanG  ContribsTalk 00:23, 7 July 2008 (EDT)
(Or, of course, Mordor. (name the Ringwraiths anyone?)00:26, 7 July 2008 (EDT)

Cold War Albania. Like Ceauşescu's Romania, but without the glitter. PFoster 00:29, 7 July 2008 (EDT)

Forgot about Albania (doesn't everyone?). They did, & have, a thing about Norman Wisdom, so they're probably not that appropriate. SusanG  ContribsTalk 00:35, 7 July 2008 (EDT)
If real and current, I would say North Korea before they disarmed their nuke thingy a little while ago. If real and historical I would say Romania in the early 1400's, specifically the region Wallachia, because anybody who has read Bram Stoker knows who the Andy of that time and place was. If fictional, the Global Community of Nicolae Carpathia. Thats right, I read it. --*Gen. S.T. Shrink* Get to the bunker 01:02, 7 July 2008 (EDT)

It would be Nazi Germany. There was a cult of personalty around the leader (andy). If you are a certain type of person (Liberal), you are killed. And there was also a secret resistance against Hitler back in the time, not to mention we would be the Allies.--Bobby 23:18, 12 July 2008 (EDT)

Not to mention that And.. Hitler seldom gave orders to his immediate circle of acolytes, but let them anticipate his wishes, and he hardly ever intervened in the turf war squabbles between his sy.. gauleiters. Fretfulporpentine 05:02, 29 August 2008 (EDT)
Godwin's law. Konstanty 01:32, 29 August 2008 (EDT)

North Korea, as Christopher Hitchens says: George Orwell's 1984 was published at about the time that Kim Il Sung set up his system, and it really is as if he got hold of an early copy of the novel and used it as a blueprint. ("Hmmm … good book. Let's see if we can make it work.")

Zimbabwe as I've said before. Mugabe blames Britain for all his country's woes, Schlafly blames liberals. They have both run their "project" into the ground and allow their thugs to beat up, intimidate and kill-off the opposition. Jollyfish.gifGenghisRationalWiki GOLD member 04:15, 29 August 2008 (EDT)
And both are vehemently homophobic. But where's CP's Morgan Tsvangirai? Totnesmartin 05:27, 29 August 2008 (EDT)

Turkmenistan. With A. Schlafly as Turkmenbashi. --LArron 18:29, 30 August 2008 (EDT)

China. Their government's shameless assignment of "reeducation" (or whatever it was) to anyone who legally applied to protest just reminds me so much of the way Andy blocked anyone who signed FernoKlump's "Let's be nicer" petition. <font=""; face="Comic Sans MS">Jellyfish! There are sliding doors, and there are secret doors 18:35, 30 August 2008 (EDT)

Afghanistan under the Taliban. What is the difference, really? Carptrash 19:27, 30 August 2008 (EDT)

Animal Farm

If Conservapedia was Orwell's Animal Farm, aside from the obvious (Andy as Napoleon), who would the characters be? (I call the Donkey). δλερνερ διαλέγομαι | συνεισφέρω 09:13, 30 August 2008 (EDT)

Trust you to elect yourself the author surrogate :P
I am Mr Frederick. And Mr Pilkington as well, on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. <font=""; face="Comic Sans MS">Jellyfish! There are sliding doors, and there are secret doors 18:39, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
Bugler is Squealer, no doubt. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 18:47, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
An analogue of Squealer would have to be someone who can argue compellingly. We may be waiting a while to find a suitable candidate. <font=""; face="Comic Sans MS">Jellyfish! There are sliding doors, and there are secret doors 18:57, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
I guess. Perhaps TK before his final departure? --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 19:31, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
I only gave you one criterion! Have you even met TK??
I would say PJR, but he's never been deliberately manipulative; he just argues what he believes. What about... No, I just checked the sysop list and there isn't one. Everyone is either too nice (Henry, PJR) or too muddled (Ed Poor, TerryH) to fit the bill. On the other hand, we have several perfect matches for Napoleon. <font=""; face="Comic Sans MS">Jellyfish! There are sliding doors, and there are secret doors 19:38, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
You don't think TK could argue compellingly? Th unsure.gif --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 19:42, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
Never, sir! <font=""; face="Comic Sans MS">Jellyfish! There are sliding doors, and there are secret doors 19:43, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
Ok, perhaps manipulatively fits better, but I think he's still the closest we'll get. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 19:44, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
Probably. Squealer never had his own agenda, though. TK is more like Mr Frederick -- what with the destruction of the windmill (it was a windmill, wasn't it??) and everything. <font=""; face="Comic Sans MS">Jellyfish! There are sliding doors, and there are secret doors 19:46, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
Oh, that's right - there are the humans as well. Righty then. Bugler and Karajou together as the dogs? --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 19:50, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
Yeah! Now we're cooking with charcoal!
Who shall be Snowball? DanH, maybe? Hmmm... doesn't quite fit. <font=""; face="Comic Sans MS">Jellyfish! There are sliding doors, and there are secret doors 19:58, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
I was thinking PJR. The mostly benevolent intellectual who eventually gets kicked out by the power-player. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 20:01, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
I prefer 1984. At least there is that cute Julia. Editor at CPLiar at RP! 18:50, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
Definitely Oceania. That's how I always describe it to people. -- Yossarian 19:36, 30 August 2008 (EDT)

Where's Oceania? <font=""; face="Comic Sans MS">Jellyfish! There are sliding doors, and there are secret doors 19:38, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
UK, Americas, New Zealand and Australia. 19:51, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
Plus bits of Africa. Assuming The Party can be trusted, of course. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 19:55, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
