Marriage

Marriage is a state in which two (or, theoretically, more) individuals are considered by the state as a single legal entity. It also refers to the religious principle which recognizes that two (or, again, more) people have decided to bond themsevles together, preferably forever.

[edit] Traditional Marriage

A "traditional marriage" is one in which a single man has managed to put one or more women in service to him, usually by making them economically subservient. The services the women would provide would include child-raising, house-keeping, and sex. Needless to say, most modern people consider this a horrible institution, and are glad to have left it behind.

[edit] Same-sex marriage

Many Religious Right activists are aghast at the idea that two men or two women could apply for the same governmental rights that the civil institution provides. Somehow, they constantly conflate the political and the religious institutions involved.
