Andy's Teaching Income

Well, now we got a price for his classes - $250/head. [1] A glance at the youtube video shows about 35 students (counted frame at 0:19). Thats $8750. Gotta say "Damn thats a bit". hats for 1 hour/week?! If only our public school teachers were paid that much for each class they taught each semester (they tend to teach 4 or 5 classes 5 days a week, that would be 20 * 8750 * 2 (semesters per year)... $350,000. Ahh, if only we valued our public school teachers like that. It is amazing they do as well as they do on a tenth of that (or less in many districts). He also says it includes all supplies. He almost certainly schools them, say, three times a week @ one hour per, and has to prep and grade as well. No matter how much of a tool he is, those "side time" costs can't be denied. So call it $8750 for nine hours a week (one prep/one grading per each class, stat pulled out of Andy's ass, but probably quite reasonable), for what, 16 weeks/term? 9 x 16 = 144 hours; 8750/144 = about $60/hour before expenses. Knock out, say, $50/student in expenses (some things, like texts, can be re-used, and I bet his "rent" at the church is nominal if not free), and you've got 7000/144 ~= $48/hour. Sounds like a lot, but he still has to pay taxes, (pay to keep CP on line?), and stuff. As a bona fide lawyer, both of those are far below what he should be able togross or earn. If he could manage 4 classes he'd gross about 35k a year, 5 is about 43k. One last comment - a class size of 35 students is a poor statistic. Decent public schools (and of course private ones and colleges) strive to average perhaps half that. Not stateside it isn't. Our local (as in my school district) average salary is over $50k, and they get nice health coverage on top of that (another 6-10k). Keep in mind that out of his net after expenses, he also has to pay both halves of his FICA, too, another 7.5% not included in the teacher salary. I must say, though, that we have a "good" school system, which equals "expensive". Good point about Kettle's comment, but do we know how many hours? It could be all afternoon. Can't find the dif off the top of my head, but I recall Kettleticket saying that the class meets once a week for maybe 2 hours. Not sure on prep time, but if he teaches the same thing over and over again the prep time for each class is probably minimal. Grading time is the likely the real time-consumer, and I don't know how much he has to do. If it's a few multiple choice tests each semester then that's hardly anything. If he has to grade papers, well, that's a lot more. Whatever the case, he seems to be doing pretty well financially, as I doubt there are many $150 textbooks he provides (are there any textbooks crazy enough for him to rely on? Probably...). I think there's enough here to make his argument that WP is associated with a for-profit venture while CP isn't assertion pretty laughable. Oh, and one more thing, I'm not completely certain, but I think the while Cliff's Notes thing is not true. From the video, whatever book he has looks to big and thick to be Cliff's Notes, and I don't think Cliff does history in any case. Likely it's some crappy homeskool thing with a similar color scheme.
