Al-Qaeda, (meaning "The Base" in Arabic) is a fundamentalist Sunni Islamist organization, originating out of the Egyptian Jihadist and the anti-Soviet mujehadeen in Afghanistan. In its current form, it is a largely decentralized terrorist organization that focuses on the goal of creating a Sunni Caliphate throughout the Middle East and Central Asia. Al-Qaeda is active mostly in unstable countries, such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, and Eritrea.

Among the acts for which they have credibly claimed responsibility are the World Trade Center attacks of September 11, 2001 and the bombing of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania[1].
