Hajj

The Hajj is a pilgrimage made to Mecca at a particular time of the year[1], and is one of the five pillars of Islam. All Muslims must make the pilgrimage at least once in their life, unless health issues preclude them. Like the other 4 pillars, the pilgrimage is considered a way to unify all Muslims through common experiences.

Once in Mecca, there are several religious stops each pilgrim tries to make. The single most significant is the Kaaba, however they also visit Mount Arafat, the Zomëzomë well, and throws stones at the Devil at the walls of jahmarat.

Traditionally, only the men were required to make this pilgrimage though women were allowed to. But as women have become more active in their faith over the last centuries most Muslim women consider it to be as important to them as to the men.

[edit] Notes

  1. Islam uses a lunar calender, so the dates of the pilgrimage change from year to year
