It's interesting (or perhaps it's not) that "penguin" is one of the very few English words which may be derived from Welsh. I'd love to be able to derive some profound significance from this fact - but, sadly, I cannot.--Bob^{bing up} 17:56, 23 October 2008 (EDT)

If you want a bit more on this word: "pen" is Welsh for head and "gwyn" is Welsh for white. Hence "white head". There may be a problem here though, as I'm not convinced that most penguins have white heads.

No, they don't (at least many I've seen at aquariums don't). I looked up origin theories after your posting and noticed that there is some belief that it comes Newfoundland's "pin-wing" name for them - which seems to make sense.
