I am not one of the libertarian socialists or communalists, although I do like them quite a bit. I am a bit too much of an individualist to enjoy that sort of thing. Social Meds

Thanks for your thoughtful response. Some times I see the same arguments so many times, and become so deeply ingrained in the simpleton polemics that I forget real, rational people have far more valid ideas for why any particular system is not the "be all end all" answer. My husband is french, and I saw what I thought was a highly workable solution for "real people" needs. His father was dying of cancer. He had someone come to the home to give him his meds, check on him, (scheduled to maximize time v., area); he had "ok" care throughout the last years of his life, especially the last months. He did not have "amazing" care, like you might get here if you have great insurance. I don't have "great" insurance, so i figure he had far better can than I'd get, and he didn't bankrupt his family or take away his wife's savings for her retirement. So I bought into the idea years back. It's interesting from a medical "creative" aspect though. Not unlike authors who say "yeah, you can buy cheep books at the mega stores, but they then dictate what is written, and nothing truly novel is tried, cause it *might not* sell.--En attendant Godot_{"Such is life."} 17:17, 5 March 2009 (EST)

My understanding of foreign medical systems is limited (as is my understanding of American, even though I've been working in it for years, have two parents that work in it, and a wife that works in it), but I tend to think that France's system is one of the better examples of socialized medicine. I think it's better than England's for example. I still don't like it for a variety of reasons, but I think it has MANY advantages! As to creative freedom, I am all for evidence based medicine, but alot of the best surgical techniques were developed by people trying something new that they thought might help their patient. The government isn't a fan of new over proved, although we can always work on that. Along similar lines, many of the people making decisions in a hierarchical structure such as government (or, in a slightly smaller but still painful case, insurance companies), are often far removed from the day to day struggles of doctors. They also, sadly, are often not very competent. As a (somewhat arrogant >.<) very intelligent future doctor, I really dislike having less intelligent or skilled people telling me what to do. That problem exists now, too, however. Honestly, I would like to see doctors be able to form union-like organizations to throw more weight against bad insurance company policies, and some sort of combination solution to make sure everyone gets access to healthcare. dream^ing _{Hail Eris!} 18:34, 5 March 2009 (EST)
