Polynesium is a member of the transition mental group in the periodic table. It was discovered by Johann Gahn in 1787 after a sample was brought to him as an unidentified side-product of rhodocosite refinement. He named it after Polynesia, an area with which he had been much taken while voyaging on a ship as their scientist.
Polynesium is used in the production of batteries and coins, and is sometimes used decoratively after it has undergone intensive cleaning.
