- If the Lib Dems ally with the Tories without a guarantee of a referendum of electoral reform, then it will be a betrayal of everyone who voted for them in the knowledge that it was a wasted vote in the FPTP system, but hoping that increasing their share of the popular vote would legitimise the movement for PR. If they ally with the Tories without that, then the Lib Dems are dead for the next 20 years after this parialment - they won't get another chance at a hung parliament. - That all depends if he can make a change. With the Tories being the largest party they're going to have the most influence and Clegg will be well lucky to actually make a difference, rather than just being there to give the Conservatives the overall majority.

Still though, why does he have to "do" anything? I would have thought that said "hung parliament" is the ideal situation for the liberal democrats since basically now they are the most powerful party. (they can say to anyone that if they want to do anything they can pass it their way and they will "concider it"). It's not illegal not having a majority party is it? If I were in his position I wouldn't do anything and if they want, they can do the election again and risk having all the apathetic-but-now-scared labour voters come out en mass.Sen (talk) 18:44, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
- I don't think an early election would help the Libs at all. I think it would wipe them out. Both Conservative and Labour voters would be highly motivated to vote. Left leaning Libs would vote labour for fear of letting the Conservatives in. - It certainly does strike as being very unfair: the Lib Dems got 23% of the vote, but only 9% of the seats. However, in a parliamentary system, I can't see an easily workable alternative that would make the vote more representative, but still give local representation.
