Southern Baptist Convention
From RationalWiki
The Southern Baptist Convention is an American Baptist denomination founded in 1845, after a dispute over the appropriateness of letting slave-owners be missionaries to Africa. Most Baptists found slavery distasteful, and even against the teachings of Jesus, but the Southern Baptists felt it was biblically justified and part of their inherent rights.
Billy Graham and Pat Robertson are members. Jerry Falwell, originally a member of the fundamentalist Baptist Bible Fellowship International, later switched to Southern Baptist Convention affiliation as well.
During the 1980s it was the subject of a successful fundamentalist takeover. Jimmy Carter, who had been a member, left for a more moderate Baptist denomination because of this.
A lot of kids in the late 1960s and 1970s knew of the group because of their cartoon series Jot, which was used as filler material on Saturday morning TV. Jot tried to brainwash kids into believing the morality of the Bible.
