Fun talk:Zeus

From RationalWiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The original of Zeus was written for kids taking a short time off from gaming wikis that Wikia encourages, I aimed the story partly at youngsters from 12 upwards. Many of them have been indoctrinated from a very young age that the Bible is true but other mythology is silly. I'm showing them, perhaps for the first time in an entertaining way that Christian mythology isn't different from other mythology. When they're older the brighter kids may come here to read and edit.

This certainly needs adaptation to RationalWiki but I hope the links I gave will help others write an adult article. Proxima Centauri (talk) 18:45, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

"I hope others can write an adult article" You don't see the flaw in that? --Mikal Harass Follow 18:49, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

Mother fuck that is bad. i mean comments that have nothign to do with zeus, comments that are not how anyone but elementary schools teach about zeus "They had to follow his orders" - really? HERA ring any bells? dear god do not ever take anything from your atheism page and just dump it here. --Green mowse.pngGodot44 days and counting - Be informed. Vote. 19:50, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
Also bad, this version has sources, Godot removed my sources and accused me of writing unsourced material. I hope this article gets rewritten to the caliber of Odin and Thor rather than being deleted. Proxima Centauri (talk) 20:29, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
So now you're the EdPoor of RationalWiki? Not exactly an endearing self-application...-- Seth Peck (talk) 20:37, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
Oh for god's sake. There is NOTHING in Johna that suggests it is from or related to the Greek myths, the fact that they both happen to live in stomachs is just "so dang what"! Zeus does not die yearly, that joy belongs to Dionysis, to Persopheny, to a hoard of lesser gods, but not Zeus. The fact that your links are to travel sites, a child's site, and about.com is not really compelling me to accept something that isn't in any standard book of mythology. Velchanos, the Crete high god, associated later with zeus, did die at some time, and is thought to have derived from an earlier dying-rising god, but that's not zeus.— Unsigned, by: WaitingforGodot / talk / contribs
Someone ought to sit Proxima down with a copy of The Golden Bough, or perhaps The Jesus Mysteries, flawed though the latter may be. She might then learn that this argument has been done many times by better thinkers and better writers, and that writing idiotic screeds about Zeus or Ahura Mazda or Cernunnos won't change anything. Mission[edit]

Unless there are hoards of Zeus worshippers that I am unaware of it seems to me that this article is a couple of thousand years too late and does nothing whatsoever to further our mission. Oh, and the Jonah/Zeus analogy is stretching things too far in a desperate attempt to achieve relevance. Innocent Bystander (talk) 21:53, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

Hey, were here to prove that Christianity is completely wrong and unoriginal and is a myth and got to attack it while it corrupts and hurts little kids! It's TOTALLY relevant to this article. --Mikal Harass Follow 21:55, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
Plus, plus plus plus - whales. stomachs. giants. stomachs. THAT IS EVIDENCE OF ALIENS. or.. wait... what?Green mowse.pngGodot44 days and counting - Be informed. Vote. 22:39, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
I have met one person who worshipped mercury, but yeah, this is awful. ТyBother me 22:17, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
There are a few Hellenic Reconstructionists around, mainly in Greece of course, so an article on them would be good. An article on Zeus that's just a stick to hit Christianity with? Er, no. Maybe move to fun? Or redspace? SophieWilder 22:48, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
I tried to fix it, but I'm out of turd polish for the day. I say dump it. -- Seth Peck (talk) 22:50, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

"Fun"???[edit]

This doesn't look like very much fun at all. JubalHarshaw (talk) 02:01, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

And I fuckin' well know fun. JubalHarshaw (talk) 02:02, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
Funspace: the last refuge of the sub-literate trying to protect their article. ТyBother me 02:07, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
I thought that was Wikia. SophieWilder 08:53, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
She ported this from wikia ТyBother me 12:29, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
Then we can send it back without undue pericombobulation. SophieWilder 17:50, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

  4. Decent articles about pagan deities are possible. Unless somebody wants to put the work into making this one of them... JubalHarshaw (talk) 16:28, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
  5. If it's on Wikia, why is it here? especially as the sole reason for its being infunspace is the original author trying to protect her pet article, citing the talk page... which says lots of delete comments, and a single suggestion of funspace. Desperation much, Proxima? SophieWilder 17:54, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

  • Userspace would be fine too, though it really belongs in redspace - David Gerard (talk) 21:36, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
  • So far it looks like people ganging up on Proxy. So it might be crap, but if you don't like the article then help improve it. We have off-mission articles on Norse gods but if Zeus doesn't deserve an article then get rid of Thor and his ilk also. There's a whole pile of off-mission stubs in maths as well. It's about time that we decided what we really want to keep now we are not creating articles purely for the sake of building an article base. • To be fair, Proxima is a stupendously terrible writer who would be banned from all article space in any decently fascist arrangement of rules. But even in this one, "other worthless dogshit exists" is not a reason not to bin this piece of dogshit - David Gerard (talk) 06:28, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
