Lesbian is a term used to denote female homosexuals. It is derived from the Island of Lesbos, where the noted lesbian poet Sappho lived. Indeed, Sapphic can be a poetic synonym for "lesbian."

Traditionally, lesbians have been forgotten in the general fight for equality by homosexuals. This changed in the 1980s as greater awareness of sexism took hold, along with the general decimation of male homosexuals.

There are lesbians, and there are Lesbians. Those who are born Lesbians have always been annoyed that those who are born lesbians called themselves lesbians even though the vast majority of lesbians are not Lesbians. So the Lesbians sued the lesbians in Greek court to keep them from using the word "lesbian" to describe themselves. However, the Greek court has decided that those who are born lesbians can be called "lesbians" even when they are not born Lesbians.
