Oscar Wilde

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in Dublin, Ireland on 15th October, 1854. He became a renowned wit in London, and wrote many plays, poems and stories.
He was convicted of 'gross indecency' and imprisoned for two years, most of which he spent in Reading Gaol. It was after his imprisonment that he wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol.
Subsequently he moved to Paris where he lived as 'Sebastian Melmoth'. He is buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery.
The work that will be familiar to most is The Importance of Being Earnest but he wrote many other plays as well as poetry (see above) and prose (e.g. The Picture of Dorian Gray).
Oscar was memorably portrayed by Stephen Fry in the 1997 film Wilde.
