The Internal Revenue Service is the main federal tax collection agency in the United States.

Everybody hates the IRS, but most would probably hate it a lot worse if there were no IRS. It's a catch 22 and you can't win.

The IRS is a bogeyman in most tax protester arguments, who claim the IRS is not really a legitimate agency or that IRS regulations make payment of taxes optional. The IRS considers these frivolous arguments.
