There has been considerable concern in recent years due to links between long-term HRT in post-menopausal woman and breast cancer.[1]

HRT is also prescribed to transsexual individuals in order to suppresses naturally occurring hormones and replace them with those of the opposing physical sex for the purpose of making their body match their psychological gender identity.

According to the Harry Benjamin Standards of Care, a psychiatrist must diagnose a patient with Gender Identity Disorder and provide a letter approving HRT in order for therapy to commence. However, many self-medicate, as HRT medications are not controlled substances in most countries.
