I'm having a conversation withmy friend.

Is weight centripedal force? Is centripedal force weight?

In more detail if we stoppped the earth spinning would that stop weight?

If we stopped one, could we stop the other?

Weight is gravitational force = mass in kg X ~9.8m/s2. Unit is the newton.Tytalk 22:19, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
I'll bite.
Unless otherwise affected all objects remain at rest or travel at a constant speed in a constant direction. (Newton) Centripetal force is the force required to change that direction of a from a straight line into a curve. In the simplest sense, for an object in circular orbit then the force needed to make that orbit circular is the gravitational pull. In this instance, but NOT by definition, gravity is the centripetal force. When you swing a bucket around your head the force of your arm holding the bucket is the centripetal force.
In very simple terms, gravity is the force exerted by one body with mass upon another. If the earth stopped spinning we would still be held down by gravity and, as such, we would still have weight. For objects stationary on the surface of the earth, gravity is many orders of magnitude greater than the required centripetal force. Otherwise we would be floating.
I hope this makes some sense. Bad Faith (talk) 23:01, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

That's great thanks, so only in this case. And thanks for bein able to separate the questions.
