Good essay. My feeling is that people engaged in this kind of social charity work should do so in a non-discriminatory way, irrespective of their religious motivations. E.g. volunteers at the Samaritans provide impartial counselling, irrespective of whether individually they might have strong opinions on the issues which people speak to them about. Adoption agencies (religious or secular) should work the same way: impartially providing a service, irrespective of sexuality, marriage status, etc. This isn't necessarily incompatible with religious charity - e.g. many Christians take the view that Christ taught us to be kind to others without judging them. It tends to be more problematic with religious conservatism, which is much more exclusive & judgemental. Wèàšèìòìď^{Methinks it is a Weasel} 14:59, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. Jesus wasn't perfect, but he did give some fine examples of how to live a decent life. Matthew 5:16 is my favourite example of setting an example through works. I think that religious groups should simply avoid things where their doctrine and beliefs will simply not allow them to provide impartial services. I suppose there's so much in scripture that can be used to justify the good and the bad, but Christians acting in the true spirit of charity are very much appreciated, and admired.--Concernedresident 17:51, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
