Enhanced weathering is the process of adding crushed rocks to farmland and other flat areas to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, lessening radiative forcing. Unlike other forms of geoengineering, enhanced weathering is relatively uncontroversial in the scientific community. If implemented, enhanced weathering could sequester 100 Gt of carbon dioxide by 2100 with virtually no negative consequences. The rock would also act as a non-toxic fertilizer, and produce alkaline substances that could prevent ocean acidification. Despite all these benefits, and the low relative cost, enhanced weathering has not been implemented.
