Straw men arguments[edit]

For what it's worth, you have a habit of writing straw men arguments and saying "but I found a reference for it". One person, doing one thing is bad, yes. But it's not indicative of an entire movement. We can be critical, we can be thought provoking, but we don't need to take cheep shots just because it is a religion. For example, Gidians. Most of them, by and large, are highly respectful of the rules of the schools and of keeping kids safe. Doesn't mean I want them giving out bibles to kids, cause as you do point out, it's strangers giving our kids stuff, without adults permission - but they aren't "encouraging kids to run across the streets". --Pink mowse.pngGodotoi, putain, genial, merci 14:28, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

One of the worst things we can do is demonize our opposition. An American Fallacy (super crazy fun time!) 15:34, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

I edited the Gideons article to say encouraging kids to run across streets may not be typical, I thought the Freedom from Religion Foundation [1] was reliable. If it isn't please tell me. Proxima Centauri (talk) 11:30, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Um, there is never "traffic" where there is a stopped school bus and child pedestrians. That's what all those flashing red lights and stop signs are for. ħumanUser talk:Human 16:07, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

Here's a hint, only because I like you....[edit]

The third bit of information in a sentence is often a good place to think about starting a new sentence. "Proxima Centauri is a wiki editor who is a fabulous dancer and who also makes all of her own clothes" would read better as : "Proxima Centauri is a wiki editor and a fabulous dancer. She makes all of her own clothes." Run-on sentences are not your friend, especially on a wiki page. P-Foster Talk ""Santorum is the cream rising to the top."" 19:23, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

reflist[edit]

So what's the problem with {{reflist}} instead of <references/>? Beyond "I don't like it," that is. Sophiebecause liberals 14:45, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

There's no big problem, just I was used to <references/> and Teh Would be Tyrant kept changing it to {{reflist}}. Since Teh Monstrous Tyrant is regularly rude and unpleasant to me that's something I don't like. Proxima Centauri (talk) 14:52, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

The thing about reflist is that you can format it into columns and such. The parser issue is when you put a quote before a sidebar. Тyeh? 17:37, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
Reflist also uses a smaller font and therefore looks less clunky. Redchuck.gif ГенгисOur ignorance is God; what we know is science.Moderator 17:42, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Archbishop[edit]

That announcement was a week or two ago, why announce it today? Everyone who cares knows already. As an april fool joke, it's complete crap. So what's your game? Sophiebecause liberals 08:26, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

I can't understand how someone as intelligent and aparently rational as the Archbishop can know what he does and remain a Christian. His theology training must mean he is familiar with the material below, for example.

I hoped readers would laugh and then start thinking how irrational religious belief is. Proxima Centauri (talk) 19:58, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Your latest edit to RW[edit]

Tmt reverted it, so I'm popping in to provide a possible explanation as to his motives. The info wasn't really relevant to the article. Yeah, it was about RationalWiki, but it's too specific compared to the rest. It would be great for some sort of essay on RationalWiki user demographics, though.--"Shut up, Brx." 20:34, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

As opposed to others on the wiki, I choose to take a proactive and productive approach when PC inserts information into an article. It may not be particularly smooth when she does so, but I find it disgusting how some people flip a switch every time she does something. So I try and correct the flow should she make an edit that doesn't quite gel with whatever it is she is editing--"Shut up, Brx." 20:51, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

I can explain it. Alexa is voodoo pure unadulterated straight up woo. We don't need to quote it as informative or knowledgeable. In fact we should have an article Alexa decrying it as pseudostats. Tmtoulouse (talk) 20:44, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

Bullies and trolls[edit]

Many of us are having problems we don't deserve, see here. Proxima Centauri (talk) 18:51, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

No one is bullying or trolling you. Brx, yes. You? no. We are asking you to be more careful with your edits; less anti-religious with your edits, and do more research before you make a claim you found on one website. You, like I, have problems with our writing style, so people have to edit for style - and that can be frustrating to them, but that's their problem. Trolling would be reverting, just cause we don't like you or what you have to say. I've never seen anyone do that with you. Again, brx, yes. You? no. cause no where, EVER, have you been destructive, mean spirited, childish, or any other negative. And that's the difference in plain view. Your goal is to improve the wiki. It's not to piss people off, push their buttons or play drama queen. :-) That's a very good place to start. --Pink mowse.pngGodot On a perdu le contrôle 18:57, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

I do not attack Christianity and avoid its good side, for example I wrote a great deal in the article about Methodism showing the progressive side many Methodists have.

  1. Here I note how some Methodists allowed woman preachers.
  2. Here I added more and included support of Trade Unionists.

It’s difficult to disentangle what I wrote from what other users added and adapted but I know I put a lot of research into how far Methodists help poor people and give women influence.

  1. Here Tyrannis reverted indiscriminately a large amount of work that I had done and that looks like trolling. Significantly this trolling happened a few hours before you denied that I am being trolled, this type of thing happens continually.

I don’t know one way or the other why Brxbrx is being attacked, I just know that I am trolled unfairly and I doubt that I am the only one. Proxima Centauri (talk) 08:16, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Is this a school yard? Is it an office? Are you being stalked and hassled over the internet? No, you're not. If you think RW istreating you unfairly, well, fuck off. No one is making you stay and RW editors don't have to bend over and accept every fuck-knuckle that shows up. Stay and lump it or leave and forget it. No one has to change to accommodate you freaks and you don't have to stay in a place you feel you are being bullied. So...hop it. AceModerator 08:25, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

PC does not like the people at RW. Option one: expect the entire site to bend to PC's whim. Option 2: Perhaps this isn't the site for me. Pick one (hint, it's option 2). AceModerator 12:57, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
PC, that's the second time in this thread that you've used that one example. Do you know any other songs? P-Foster Talk "The existing superstructure has handed out crumbs. We don’t want crumbs; we want the whole loaf now.” --Ras Frank I 12:58, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

I understand how PC feels; I agree that she is being bullied. Even if some of her contributions leave something to be desired, there is a right way and a wrong way of remedying that. The right way is to clearly, politely and rationally explain what is wrong with what she wrote, and how to correct it. Telling her to fuck off is the wrong way; and it is a form of bullying. Unfortunately, this site continues to tolerate and even encourage bullying. Bullying is irrational, and yet another example of how this site fails to live up to its name. (((Zack Martin))) 13:15, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

If you don't like it Maratrean, you can leave at anytime. I, for one, am not going to change for you, PC, brx or anyone else. And if RW changes I certainly won't insist it bend to my whims. AceModerator
No complaints we might be encouraging her to kill herself? Also. WHY IS RW NOT RATIONAL!. --il'Dictator Mikal 13:16, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
"But I thought this was supposed to be RATIONALWiki!" Drink! - P-Foster Talk "The existing superstructure has handed out crumbs. We don’t want crumbs; we want the whole loaf now.” --Ras Frank I 13:18, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
The essay doesn't work. "I thought this was supposed to be RATIONAL wiki!" cry the critics, usually BoNs, whenever RW says something they don't like - what is RW saying here that I don't like that is making me say it's irrational? (I've never said that e.g. atheism is necessarily irrational - it might be irrational in some cases, but in many cases it is rational) What makes RW irrational, is not any of its particular beliefs or opinions, but rather its culture. So the essay is irrelevant. (((Zack Martin))) 13:32, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

The edit that you're complaining about[edit]

  • "Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day." Passive voice, Considered by whom?
  • "...but as is common with superstitions there are also some who consider the day lucky." Poor phrasing. Awkward, makes a run-on sentence. Should be a new sentence.
  • "And frightened people may have more car accidents..." As a rule, sentences should not start with the word "and."
  • "==Reasons==" That's a really clumsy header.
  • "Thirteen is an unlucky number in some but not all systems of Numerology and Number woo." Using upper-case for common nouns.
  • "*Superstitions round February 29th" You mean "around," or "related to."
