First law of thermodynamics

The first law of thermodynamics states that the total energy of the universe is constant. It is an expression of the law of conservation of energy — that energy cannot be created or destroyed, but can only change form.

Another expression of the first law is that a system exchanges energy with its surroundings by transferring heat and doing work.
