TerryH seems to think that the Earth is much bigger than it is.

Well, Terry, guess what? You know how far it is to the closest star to the Sun? Yeah. 4.2 light years. Do you know how often comparable distances are found between stars in the Milky Way? The stellar disk by itself is approximately 100,000 light years across, and on average 1,000 light years in diameter. The Milky Way is estimated to contain between 200 and 400 billion stars. Think about this. Then look at the Pale Blue Dot picture, and watch this video.

Do you know what this picture is? This is a picture of 36.7 square arcminutes of apparently empty sky. This is about the size of the patch of sky covered by a square millimeter of paper held one meter away from your eye. Do you know what each of those points of light is? And individual galaxy, or occasionally a globular cluster. Do you remember the discussion of the size of the Milky Way? The Milky Way is of a fairly large size among known galaxies, but each of these is effectively only slightly smaller. This is a tiny, tiny piece of the Universe, Terry. This. What was that about the Earth being so important?

Oh, and as this image is a product of NASA, it's under the public domain.
