Establishment Clause

The Establishment Clause is a clause in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution that states that the US Congress cannot establish something as a state religion. The 14th amendment to the same constitution has long been recognized to project that limitation onto the legislatures of the individual states within the US.
It is because of this clause that the governments within the US are not allowed to show any preferences toward religion. This means no preferences to a single religion, or to religion as a whole against non-religion. This is why government institutions (such as public schools) cannot give outright support to religious causes.
