  • The 2008 election night party is enshrined at this dump. Thank you all for popping in, it was a blast!
  • The May 20/21 2009 RationalWiki second birthday party is here. There may still be some stains on the carpet, so be careful.

  • Somewhere around here I usually express my preference for avoiding table-tennis conversations. If I muck up your talk page, I'll stalk you until you reply there. If you defame my lovely estate of ones and zeros here, I'll add some random non sequitur to it here. Cheers! ħumanUser talk:Human

Too bad I didn't write it in a way that "expected" it to be read verbatim on the air, causing Malloy to stumble a bit due to the style. And, luckily, RW.org comes straight to RW.com! Can't believe I mucked that up. ħumanUser talk:Human 23:40, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Wow, and I thought I spent too much time here. How the hell do you do it? Tetronian you're clueless 21:47, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
He's been here since the beginning. Kinda like the Oracle in the Matrix. SJ Debaser 21:49, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
Ah, so Human is an all-knowing computer program? Now it makes sense. Tetronian you're clueless 21:50, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
I must have missed the Matrix film in which the Oracle knocks back a few cans and goes on a rampage. Now that'd be far better than any of the sequels they released. By the way, how do we see the stats for editing? I never managed to find that bit of RW. --ConcernedresidentAsk me about your mother 21:55, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Congrats! :-D I voted for you. lol. Question: how does one remove the "Merry Christmas" sign from the top of the "recent changes" page? Or is it still supposed to be there? I thought by now that it's a bit dated though.. I need to learn more wiki-stuff. Refugeetalk page 22:09, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
It's supposed to be there; It's one of the templates that appear on RC when there is a holiday. I'm not entirely sure why it still says Merry Christmas, though. Anyone know? Tetronian you're clueless 22:12, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
It's for the Orthodox Christmas. ħumanUser talk:Human 22:23, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
Ohhhhh. Duh, I should know that. Tetronian you're clueless 22:27, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Exemption

You have earned an exemption from open hostilities in the RW/MC War of attrition. This isn't because of any real service to reason, but because you have an open mind, intolerant of authoritarianism. More of these exemptions will be issued in the coming days to worthy RW members. MarcusCicero (talk) 21:01, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Signature

Hey, I've noticed lately that my signature isn't randomizing like it used to. Now, I just get the same note on every instance of the page when it loads... Did something change in the code that I don't know about? Thanks SirChuckBThis country needs more Rutabegas 21:25, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Yes, it did. To save on server resources, Nx made it so a template only gets parsed once per page load, and our sigs are of course templates. To beat that, you put a pipe at the end as if there is a parameter coming:
SirChuckBBoom Goes the Dynamite
SirChuckBBATHE THE WHALES!!!!
SirChuckBHITWIN FOR PRESIDENT!
And it should work again. ħumanUser talk:Human 21:31, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
Hmmmm, or not... I wonder if the help file explains it? ħumanUser talk:Human 21:32, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
"Note that if you use random, you will have to change "Signature" in your preferences to include a pipe (|) before the closing brackets, like this: {{User:Yourname/sig|}" Do what I showed above but do it in your prefs. ħumanUser talk:Human 21:34, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
Got it just before I came back to read your response. Thanks again. SirChuckBWhatever happened to Skip It? 21:37, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
Please change it back. Your sig now disables the parser cache on all pages that it appears on, slowing down the load. Professor Moriarty 21:44, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
No it doesn't. You're confusing two things:
a) When you call a template without parameters, its results gets cached, so all calls to the same template on a single page will be the same. This is an optimization in MediaWiki. If there are parameters, this optimization is disabled, hence why you need to add the pipe. You need to add the pipe at every level, though it's no longer necessary to use the double template trick, you can just remove SUBST: from the nickname box in your preferences.
b) random is cached, which means sigs will only change when you reparse a page.
I fixed your sig by adding a pipe in User:SirChuckB/sig -- Nx / talk 22:14, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
Oh ok, I see the what the problem is... So now all my signatures will be randomized, but the ones I signed before changing it are gonna stay the same. Is that right? SirChuckBBATHE THE WHALES!!!! 22:20, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
Nx: when I reloaded the page, some of the sigs changed, but that was probably just the cache being purged intermittently. Professor Moriarty 22:25, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
If you didn't have the pipe in preferences, then those will be the same because of the optimization.
BTW, now you can see why template signatures are bad: editing the signature of a prominent member slows down the wiki significantly. -- Nx / talk 22:27, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I understand now. I've got it, thanks. That's also why I try to avoid changing anything about my signature. SirChuckBOne of those deceitful Liberals Schlafly warned you about 22:30, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

That's right.... Have you reached that number yet? Lord Goonie Hooray! I'm helping! 04:24, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
Dear God no. I'm just a wee bit over 4,000. At this rate, I should be at 50,000 in ... (carry the two) ... 30-ish years. Sterile syringe 04:56, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

MC template

I'm more concerned that the newbs thing Human should be addressed "my lord". Although if you assume that's intentionally sarcastic, it's equally reassuring. Scarlet A.pngmoral 04:24, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

Fucked up shit

Sometimes we are all so trivial, arguing about stuff that really doesn't matter, and then the shit hits the fan and real life intrudes. RA's parents are getting divorced, and he come here to look for some support, direction, love, even. Then fucking Goonie's sister gets raped and he has the stones to tell us what he's going through, and, again, look for a little support, direction, etc. It makes little edit wars, article deletions, etc. seem so meaningless when people in our community are dealing with seriously painful shit. I have no idea why I posted this... ħumanUser talk:Human 01:48, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

I know the feeling. Little bickerings about little matters mean nothing in the face of real life situations. I am glad that the our little community is tight enough for the most part that we can look to each other for guidance or a willing ear to listen, so to speak. Aboriginal Noise with 4 M's and a silent Q 01:54, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
I agree, it gives us a sense of perspective. Our wiki-troubles look patently absurd compared to our real-life ones. But - and maybe this is not the place for this odd brainwave - I wonder if, as future generations become more accustomed to the internet and online communities, internet troubles will seem as real as, well, real ones. Tetronian you're clueless 03:24, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
We may argue about bullshit with each other and tempers can flare but there isn't one person here that I wouldn't step up and help in any way I could if they were in a pinch. Acei9 03:28, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Just wanting to prevent some kind of bitch session wherein everyone argues with each other. Acei9 00:52, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
Ace is my brother from another mother, but I gotta disagree on this one. TK being a sysop here is made of win. He'll never be able to credibly claim we "oversighted" things against our own community standards, as he commonly does. Think this one through. Nutty Roux100x100 anarchy symbol.svg 00:53, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
Its been done Nutty. No matter what he will still lie even if he is a sysop. Acei9 00:56, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Look, I'm all for respecting other people and treating them as equals, but that doesn't mean I invite every Tom, Dick and Terry into my house and treat him like family. The guy is poison, and we gain nothing but grief by treating him like the good guy he has proven himself not to be. TheoryOfPractice (talk) 00:58, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

And who cares if "He can never credibly claimed..." because he never credibly claimed before and will never credibly claim anything ever again. Acei9 01:00, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
Given this guy's got a history of contacting people directly and making threats outside of CP and RW, as well as personally suffering a good deal of personal insult from him, I'd say he's a damn sight worse than MC. I say give them both the same treatment. --Kels (talk) 01:02, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure I get this. How is making him a sysop or not change his bullying? He goes berserk with the blocks and he gets promoted. If he's harassing people in private, perhaps sysoping him with flush him in to the open...δij 01:08, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, but you are dead wrong about TK. Acei9 01:16, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure how I'm dead wrong about him...I agreed with you!! δij 01:20, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
What I mean is that not sysopping TK doesn't make us horrible people. TK has made a lot of personal trouble for people and having him here is not wise. He is not to be trusted. Acei9 01:27, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
This would be good reading material for anybody wanting a background on TK past the last few WIGOs. Corry (talk) 01:34, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Ace, my point was that sysoping him might force him in to the open. Obviously the man child is a complete asshole, but short of permabanning him again (from what it appears, would be a total shitshow), what are you going to do to prevent him from trying to make alliances in private? You say sysoping him a a shit idea, but I'm looking at the status quo and thinking it'd be tough to get much worst than this.

Can anyone explain what exactly he did to "bring down" RW 1.0? I've been following this site for a long time now and still have yet to figure it out. Did he go nuts with a baseball bat or something? δij 02:24, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

I can't provide an example. He has been behaving. But I feel that his past actions, and his current actions on Conservapedia, mean that he shouldn't be a sysop here. I think most everyone else agrees. I don't think it's very fair for you to decide that you are right and everyone else is wrong, even if you are very very sure you are right.
