Hey Susan, something I thought of last night... you had mentioned somewhere that you were starting a wiki. There is a lot of great meta-discussion about the founding and growth of wiki-type projects at meatball wiki: http://www.usemod.com/cgi-bin/mb.pl that you might find interesting. RW was a "special case" in that it started with a score of fairly dedicated, enthusiastic editors (like CP did, too, although they were incompetent!). Just an FYI. I like Rc - you come across things you'd forgotten existed. I'm an SFoholic - have been since the 50s but am now more selective (budgetary reasons!). I started with Alice in Wonderland - my mother read it to me in the cradle (actually knew it almost by heart before I went to school) SusanG 14:16, 1 April 2008 (EDT)

I read tons of the stuff for my first 30 years or so, but not as much since. Always read other fiction, too, but had a special place in my heart for SF. you want to collaborate on the QM article? what's your plan? A hamiltonian approach to quantum mechanics is a way to "express the total energy of a system using the momentum and position as variables". If we have an equation for a system if we put a hamiltonian operator onto that system, what the calculations will throw back at us is the total energy for that system, using the variables of momentum and position to calculate it. i think. it probably hasn't helped though. airdish 09:25, 2 April 2008 (EDT)

hmmm, i'll have to check them out. yeh, i don't think there's any point in us being a text book - there's better resources out there. if we can give people an appreciation of the need for the technicality while helping them understand generally what's going on, then we'll have succeeded. though how you describe the hamiltonian in this way is a bit of a trick. airdish 09:42, 2 April 2008 (EDT)

undent Been rootling round - I know I've got that Gribben book but can't find it, I've several by him. He aims, I think, at my level in his pop science books. The Bryson book is a layman's interpretation of everything from the big bang to Man - it has the advantage of being readable! Brief History of Time is the book that I understand while I'm reading it but ten minutes later I'm back in my fog of ignorance. :) SusanG 10:35, 2 April 2008 (EDT)
