DB optimization

I am going to take advantage of it being a) sunday and b) having a little free time to run some database optimization routines that I hope will help smooth somethings out. Not that I recall, but you were supposed to make/run a bot that finds all the iterations of "welcome" with two parameters and delete the first one each time. And tell whoever uses it that way to stop. So we make it better. human 20:44, 24 February 2008 (EST)

Oscars

Anyone watching the Oscars? Notice how, in typical Hollywood Values fashion, the liberals are giving so many awards to non-Americans? Some barely even speak English, and gave parts of their speeches in other languages! Instead of the Academy Awards, they should be called the Affirmative Action awards! Did you notice how not one white male was even nominated for an awards in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category? It's to be expected of liberals, I suppose. Well, the Wikipedia article on CP already is facty. Remember, any statements have to be sourced, and technically all we have to offer is anecdotal evidence. Until a formal study is conducted on how much Conservapedia sucks ass, anything else that is put in is original research. As a californian who has felt a number of 3s, 4s, and a few 5s, being near a 5.3 would be something to wake a person up. If you want to find fun big old quakes, check out New Madrid, Missouri. They have earthquakes in Britain? A couple of weeks ago, I was asking myself if there was one quake-free place on earth, and I figured it would be the U.K. I'm still a little bit confused about how that would work geologically — maybe that's because I'm from a place where it's easy to explain earthquakes. Every once in a while, the Juan de Fuca likes to lovingly caress the North American Plate, and then we get a 4.0-6.0 magnitude quake. As a professional seismologist I think we can discount the presence of gay semites in Lincolnshire for this one. However, earthquakes are quite common in the UK. We had one in Wrexham about 20 years ago and both our dogs were sick. Earthquakes are quite common at tectonic plate margins although it depends particularly if a subduction zone is involved. Northwestern Europe is still vulnerable owing to its isostatic adjustment after the melting of all that heavy ice after the last ice-age. If you want to be earthquake free then you need somewhere geologically stable which tends to point to pre-Cambrian "shields" such as central Africa, north-eastern Canada, the eastern Amazon area of Brazil, western Australia and Antarctica. Quite common? I lived in Japan for many years, and we had earthquakes there on a monthly basis. As long as it feels like the floor is sliding back and forth you're all right. Vaccine hysteria

Okay, so I just finished watching Larry King Live, which was about autism, and most of the episode was dedicated to Dr. Jerry Kartzinel spreading the false claim that vaccines cause autism and singer Toni Braxton backing this up with a personal anecdote about her autistic son. The show concluded with a fine print statement from Every Child by Two that all the major medical organizations in the U.S. reject this hypothesis. Of course, this was grudgingly put up on screen in the last 30 seconds of the show, after an hour in which Dr. Kartinzel and his panel of popstars and football heroes had been given leave to vent all sorts of wacky nonsense on air (like the claim that the American government is covering up the vaccine-autism link because it fears lawsuits and that the originally seperate vaccines for measles, mumps, and rubella were combined into the comprehensive MMR vaccine only to cut down on the costs). Is this really the state of the media? That we're supposed to trust the opinion of one rogue doctor and a few celebrities over that of the AMA, AAP, NIH, FDA, and WHO? Basically, yes. The fact that Andy pretends that CP is a meritocracy, but routinely passes over the solid contributors in favor of nepotism and sycophantic homeschoolers is a bit of a slap in the face to those contributors. Angels

I've just read cp's "angel" article. there's no indication of where & when they originated. How do these fundies explain their existence?

Angels exist in Zoroastrianism for one thing, in a roughly similar manner as in the Abrahamic religions. Hinduism has the Devas, but they are somewhat different, more like demi-gods with powers of their own. Science education

One of the basic problems in the US in be is the lack of education - good teachers not getting the resources to properly enthuse students about science. With the cuts in California for education, news stations have mentioned Donors Choose[1] as ways for people to help schools. Things like this and this are ways for people to actively fight what is seen in homeschool 'science' fairs. Realizing that the audience here is international and in many cases closer in age to the students than the teachers I'm not expecting everyone to jump on board. When you search for something on google, the right hand side has paid advertisments based on the search key. For a period of time, someone had paid google some money so that a search for "Andy Schlafly" would always have a link to Rational Wiki on the side.
