The Stanford prison experiment is the common name for a psychological study done in 1971 at Stanford. Though not designed very well, it showed many disturbing conclusions about the behavior of people in such situations as that of a prison guard, showing sadistic tendencies to be present in almost everyone that are normally denied. Many people have drawn a connection between known abuse in Abu Ghraib with the results of the Stanford study.
Unfortunately, the experiment was ended early because Professor Zimbardo (who organised the project) unwisely allowed his wife to see it and she got scared; it should have been obvious that women can't be allowed anywhere near these kind of things.
