"old news"

We are currently holding a boycott of Conservapedia for the duration of the Olympics

You can do the following things during this time:

  1. Watch the Olympics
  2. Edit RationalWiki
  3. Edit Wikipedia
  4. Edit WikiBooks it is much better than Wikipedia
  5. Find some other nutjobs to harass and add it to WIGO:Clogosphere
  6. Start your own blog and shamelessly plug it on WIGO:Blogosphere
  7. Get back to work, your boss knows that you read RationalWiki
  8. Add a goat joke here

Overlong concept for boycott length

You all know that I am always for these boycotts whenever anyone suggests them, but some people are going through withdrawal and the screams are getting ugly (to say nothing of the baby crawling on the ceiling - Andy, is that you?). What say we wrap this up Friday afternoon-ish (8/15), "your" time? A week is plenty, I think, to ignore those twats. We have a job to do, people, and no one else in the modern media world takes more than a week off from providing their audience with fresh goat. Why should we? Discussion? ħumanUser talk:Human 05:06, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

Shit man, I broke ages ago and have been blocked twice.....one for questioning andys assetions here. Ace McWickedwhisky 05:23, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

Oh, but I've been doing so well. Maybe we could extend it just a bit longer than Friday? Maybe Sunday or something, thumbing our nose at the whole, "on the seventh day he rested" thing? --Arcan ¡ollǝɥ 05:29, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
We'll hear none of the bible talk ya hear! Ace McWickedwhisky 05:33, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
I broke the boycott ten minutes ago... dear lord, I'd forgotten how stupid Andy could get. I'm in favour of cutting it short. Barikada 06:17, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
I did even factually edit a couple minor articles at CP. Sorry guys. I feel ashamed. Ace, feel free to block me as well. And yes, I support cutting the boycott. (Editor at) CP:no intelligence allowed 08:19, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
I second the motion to thumb our nose at the sabbath, but there's disagreement over whether the sabbath is Saturday or Sunday, so we could break it Saturday instead. Either way (breaking it Sat or Sun afternoon) would allow us a little time to work on a "week in review" WIGO before the Monday traffic rolls in. --Toiretni 12:19, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
Okay, then - I'll third that, and propose that the boycott end Friday night with WIGO and other CP-related fun resuming on Saturday. It would also distinguish any noticeable dip in CP page views and activity caused by the boycott from any caused by the Olympics. -SpinyNorman 12:25, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
Ahem, The Goat's Shabbat is Thursday, (in August), do as ye will, but as of now WIGO is open fer bidness. CЯacke® 13:00, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

I didn't vote regarding the boycott at all, and I stayed away from CP for awhile. I decided to check up on the Lenski stuff to see if anything new was happening. But man, that mysteries page is hilarious! I wonder if he thinks it's a good idea to turn his site into 1/8th "Unsolved Mysteries" style entries. - Lardashe

I think Andy's decided that he's less likely to get pwned when dealing with the speculative, but it just makes him come off like a conspiracy nut instead. -SpinyNorman 15:13, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
Andy IS a conspiracy nut. If anyone listens to This American Life, one of the most recent podcasted episodes talks with a UK conspiracy nut who claims that the subway bombings/bus bombing were caused by electrical problems, that the bus bombing was an effort of the government to cover up the cause and to blame terrorists. He sounds exactly like Andy's method of arguing. He accuses the interviewer of racism when they point out that they have a videotaped confession provided by one of the attackers.

Andy's conspiracy bent is due to the fact that he thinks that all liberals are inherently dishonest, while all conservatives have the noblest intentions at heart. -Lardashe

American History

Does anyone know how or where one signs up for the glorious in-person class? Just curious if there might be any goats attending. --Toiretni 15:21, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

If you want to take the Eagle Forum University online American History 101 class, taught by Andy (my online encyclopedia is NOT associated with Eagle Form) Schlafly, you can register here. I'm still looking for the in-person signup. -SpinyNorman 15:51, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
I know where the in-person signup is. It's more of a imaginary-"where" more than a physical-"where". Remember, you have to be between the ages of 13 and 18--meaning, still in high school. =.= Candlewick 16:02, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

The Fog Clears...

I've been stumped these past few weeks as to why Andy is soooo obsessed with trashing the Vikings and whitewashing Columbus as a heroic explorer motivated by faith above any material interest. Even when I pointed out that Coluimbus only set out on his first voyage after first negotiating a contract granting him unprecedented power and fortune, the story in his lecture is all about Columbus the missionary. Then I started looking around Eagle Forum for links to his American History class, and found this page. Mama Schlafly - the ultimate indisputable, infallible source. -SpinyNorman 15:59, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

Manifest Destiny didn't begin on America's eastern shore, it started in Genoa?? Way to take a spectacular idea and make it even better. I suppose Columbus's father and mother meeting for the first time was a special sacred thing that had to happen as well. --Toiretni 16:09, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
They highlight anything or anyone that just *happened* to be christian when doing some remarkable. those who are Jewish are "ok, I guess", everyone else is "pagan" and therefore bad. It's critical to such people that all of human accomplishment is done in God's glory, or else why would god allow it? If those damned Islamics really invented calculus, or if those Chinese really invented pasta, well what the f is god doing? God invented everything via his chosen people the Christians. so there!--Waiting for Godot 17:11, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
Funny thing--I remember reading some oddball article suggesting that Columbus had a Messiah complex. (This looks pretty close -- no idea how credible the site is...) --Gulik 00:19, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

I encountered it, too. Anyone know if it downloads malware? I killed the session without clicking on anything, but better safe than sorry. --Phentari 16:36, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

I believe this is an attack against RW now that the boycott is off. Thank-goodness I engage in safe-cybersex. Jollyfish.gifGenghisevolving 16:39, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

It's happening to me whether I use IE or Firefox, and it seems to be an attack on CP, not RW, because no matter how I try to access CP I get the same scam. Lame. -SpinyNorman 17:13, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

Good to know it's not just me. Yes, the "antivir64" site will try to download and run an EXE file, if you let it. Don't. :) (And FWIW, the site http://www.antivir64.com/ looks basically legit (albeit registered to someone with a Finnish name based in Russia). Somehow http://scanner.antivir64.com/ goes to a different IP address (see output of whois antivir64.com, host scanner.antivir64.com. Is that supposed to be allowed, or is that just evidence of further HACKS on the part of the Moldovan scammers?
And just for extra kicks, could someone post a translation of the Finnish Wikipedia article on "Martti Peltonen", the name of the owner of antivir64.com? Google Translate does a pretty good job, but leaves all the nouns in Finnish. :) --Marty 17:14, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
Not worth translating. It's about a famous (?) photographer. Both Martti and Peltonen are very common names. (Editor at) CP:no intelligence allowed 07:14, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

I am on my work computer and it goes straight to my warning page about malware/spyware and wont let me in. Hmmm anyone know what this could mean? Ace McWickedwhisky 17:17, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

Also, as some people have already noticed, the HTTP 302 redirect doesn't affect URLs that include index.php directly, e.g. http://www.conservapedia.com/Special:Recentchanges is the scam, but http://www.conservapedia.com/index.php?title=Special:Recentchanges is the real thing. HTH --Marty 17:18, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
@SpinyNorman: I think it's safe to assume that Genghis was just joking (by implying that this was a conscious move by Andy to infect all RationalWikians with malware the moment we come out of the boycott).
General comment: Huh. Was it a hack, or did Andy just forget to renew his domain name? If the latter, I'd LOL (in real life, even). If the former, than that'd suck. Hacking servers is an idiot move, and doing so to host malware scams is just plain nasty.
(After EC) Marty's comment makes me think that this was hackery. Meh. Down with the scams! They get in the way of my Lulz! --Sid 17:20, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
Some idiot, maybe Ed, added http://conservapedia.com to the spam filter. This is what's causing the whole mess. =.= Candlewick 17:26, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
Somebody's also seems to be vandalizing the shit out of Conservapedia. This would maybe funny if it was a Rickroll instead of malware. CorryTalk 17:33, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
How did the spam filter change cause such an epic mess? --Sid 17:35, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
(EC)Yea, sorry. There are two pages I can't fix due to the spam filter. Any mention of CP is autoblocked, and the edit doesn't work. =.= Candlewick 17:36, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
If you mean the vandal reverts (which really is the least of CP's problems, though I applaud your determination to do what you can), you can just learn from all the RW-promotion wandals: Using conser<!-- -->vapedia should do the trick, I think. --Sid 17:42, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
Oh, don't think I didn't try that method... I did. I even tried removing the reference entirely... that didn't work either, for some odd reason. =.= Candlewick 17:49, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
Spam filters aren't designed to deal with things that are already in the article. It probably picks it up from the old version and doesn't understand why that "doesn't count". Nods.gif <font=""; face="Comic Sans MS">Jellyfish!Tsubasa-Jelly 17:51, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

CP was totally hacked. Bummer. Kind of. I wonder who did it?-caius (ninja) 17:40, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

Wait, so is this a hack, or a spam filter frak-up? Ed's incompetence or malice, or botH?-caius (ninja) 17:46, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

I would be mightily amused if Ed or somebody just made a fuckup. However, there does seem to be some vandalism around the same time that seems related....Ace McWickedwhisky 17:49, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

Aw man, the day I decide to end my boycott (because I'm so weak), I can't even see CP. Brb, slitting wrists. NorsemanWassail! 17:51, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
I knew it!!! I'z telepathological!! Earlier today while running errands I thought, "what if we end the boycott and CP is gone?" Well... yeah, it's still redirecting to the popups. Hi-fucking-larious. ħumanUser talk:Human 17:52, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
Clarity: Before we mix up problems: Any sort of spam filter mess-up 99.999999% isn't causing CP suddenly redirecting most "pretty" links (the ones without "index.php") to a scam site. --Sid 17:54, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
Mm-hmm.. I'll let HIM know in a bit.
Nevermind... expect a fix early tomorrow morning. =.= Candlewick 17:56, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
SANITY PRESERVER: I just made a quick Greasemonkey script to avoid clicking on scam links. I think it catches everything or at least most. If you find a bug, lemme know. LINK --Sid 18:13, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
And for those few who are allowed to edit on CP, you can use the Userscript version. Untested for obvious reasons. (I did briefly test it on RW, though) --Sid 18:28, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

I don't think that this attack was specifically aimed at CP, I assume that the DNS server that direct s traffic to CP was hit by this. - Icewedge (*bleet*) 18:33, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

I considered it, but it really seems to be site-specific. You can access CP (by using links with "index.php" like this for example), but the link rewrites were hijacked. --Sid 18:40, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

Huh, I guess the homskoll sysadmin courses aren't working too well. The liberal belief that you should keep your software up to date doesn't seem to have any traction at conservapedia. With any luck, Conservapedia will get one of those cute "this site may damage your computer" labels in google. Edited to add: Boo, it seems to have been taken down pending repairs. Remember kids, once your box is compromised, do nay trust the software on it again without a complete teardown. --JeevesMkII 18:53, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

Heh, heh. Anything we can do to help that along? Jollyfish.gifGenghisevolving 18:59, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

My bet is that Andy will play this one down or completely ignore it, just like he did with the entire site downtime issue (before people brought it up again and again): "Andy, what happened? I got redirected while trying to access CP!" - "It's working now again." Behind the scenes, he'll likely ask CPWebmaster for IPs and then let his super specialist team of investigators (read: The Ten) exchange Very Important Mails about the identity. Most of them will vote "Icewedge" while the rest will play it safe by simply accusing "One of those RW Cyber-Terrorists". Yadda yadda, the usual. --Sid 19:49, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

I don't think Andy is going to care if RWers complain about downtime on CP. Exasperate me!Sheesh! Not the most impressive contributor here 20:14, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

An old Marxist belief

Isn't it an old Marxist belief that with indefinite increased investment you would gain indefinite increased yield, which is sometimes extrapolated to the point that with infinite investment you could gain an infinite crop production out of only one acre of land? Why is it then conservatives then are the ones opposing a book that says that population growth could outstrip food production? 20:07, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

Because being worried about overpopulation makes birth control seem like a good idea, and birth control violates God's plan for the proper role of females as Baby Production Units. Therefore, it MUST be wrong. QED. --Gulik 00:24, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
Ah, good old [Malthus]...

PJR's return

The WIGO isn't all that funny, so feel free to rewrite for maximum lulz. I just couldn't get over the icy-cold shoulder PJR got from Andy. Andy's comment does do an excellent job of showcasing his ever-increasing narcissism. This bit: "Perhaps it's surprising that the site has been able to remain true to its goal" is pretty much code for "CP hasn't changed. You have." Even the last sentence, "Godspeed to you and thanks for your efforts" has a very "past tense" feel to it. I know it's not likely PJR will be banned, but I can see Andy making it very uncomfortable for him to stick around. --Arcan ¡ollǝɥ 23:33, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

Is it just me, or has Andy been writing more and more like a parody of himself every day? It's not just things like this (WIGOed), it's also responses like this. I would post some of Andy's responses from two years ago for comparison, but the history on cp:Talk:Main Page only goes back to June '08 due to conservative deceit, and I suspect most "big targets" have similarly truncated histories, so I don't feel like searching for them. Anyway, I can't figure out if Andy's going nuts, or if he's just feeling more comfortable about saying what he really thinks, or if Bugler is having a psychological effect on him, or if he's been secretly replaced with a parodist, or maybe he's just given up on CP and is having a bit of fun at everyone else's expense. --Marty 00:44, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
I thought the WIGO was pretty good. Sometimes all you need a a simple description and some links, don't have to "make the big joke". Andy didn't even ask what PJR was unhappy about, just lectured him as he would... er... a child. ħumanUser talk:Human 00:50, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

I went back through Andys contribs awhile back, his posts from early 2007, and back then he was waaaaaay different from now. He was reverting smears against Obama even! Saying they weren’t verifiable. Don’t know what happened but perhaps he is power mad or had a dream about god telling him to clear the world of liberal bias and he woke up all sticky? Ace McWickedwhisky 00:58, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

I think he's realized, subconciously at least, that nobody takes CP seriously as a "real" encyclopedia, so there's no reason for him to BOTHER with "credibility" anymore. --Gulik 01:02, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
I think it's more noticeable to us when we take a few days off. He is seriously exponential, I agree. He long ago surpassed the mere title of being a parody of himself. He is now a parody of himself parodying who he once was when he was parodying himself being a parody of himself3. ħumanUser talk:Human 01:04, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

I still firmly believe that andy thinks he has created a good resource. I reckon that CP has consumed and, much like if you tell a paraniod that you to can hear the voices, the sysops egg him on. Ace McWickedwhisky 01:07, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

Mmmmmm, eggs! (and yes, Andy is still "sincere") ħumanUser talk:Human 01:18, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
Andy doesn't even enquire after the health of the wife of one of his loyal sysops, as I would expect any "work colleague" to do - even if only out of politeness. Is the man really that self-centred, or is it plain, simple boorishness? Looking at PJR's reply, I don't think he's going to be around much longer --PsyGremlinWhut? 04:59, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
I thought I saw him wish her "well", in a sort of trivial manner, before the "fuck off" and the "godspeed" (synonyms). Shit, I hope she's ok... ħumanUser talk:Human 05:05, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
Ah so he did - my bad. Sorry Andy. --PsyGremlinWhut? 06:02, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
The problem with PJR is that he ticks most of the boxes (Christian, social conservative, YEC) EXCEPT for Andy's political conservatism and judging by his obsession with liberals that is his prime motivator. If PJR finally leaves then there doesn't appear to be anyone with any interest in site organisation so I expect things to get even more messy. If Philip reads this then I send my sympathies for his wife's health. I took out the best part of a year when my own wife was diagnosed with cancer and it's tough for everyone concerned. Thankfully she has been in remission for nearly five years and is doing OK, so I hope PJR's wife also pulls through. Jollyfish.gifGenghisevolving 06:24, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
Just chiming in (for now) to also wish PJR's wife the best! Hope things are okay now again. --Sid 06:46, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
I think it goes without saying - but I'll say it anyway - that, whatever our differences, all the Gentlemen and Ladies of another web site bear no personal animosity and wish PJR's wife a full and speedy recovery. Silver Sloth 07:48, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
Fourthed (sic). Here's to a speedy recovery to the missus, PJR. Bondurant 08:34, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

Another hilarious reply! Which contains a perfect example of the clear concise writing Andy embraces: "as often confirmed by a majority of people who embrace that approach open-mindedly."--Antifly 09:52, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

I've read that a couple of times and I know I'm no lawyer, but I seriously have no idea what the man is trying to say. --PsyGremlinWhut? 09:59, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
He is a lawyer, and he's trying to say that argumentum ad populum is just fine. Also, the outcome of logical inquiry is not testable assertions, but truth, inviolable undilutable truth. --Toiretni 10:44, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
That, and tying into it the very *real* idea that if enough minds work on editing something, the readablity, the facts, they over all presentation will benefit from the mass of minds. But somehow, one gets confused with the other in his brain and "Since i have people who agree (and delete people who disagree) and we all post "truth", it is truth." It was hardly surprising to see that in the Obama "name makes him a Muslim" piece on the talk page, there were tons of red names. If you don't have/hear controversy or differences of opinion, how can you say you have "majority". oh well.--Waiting for Godot 11:57, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
I hardly think that Andy's reversion ~(WIGO'd) of PJR's evidence-based editing is going to convince him to stick around. Jollyfish.gifGenghisevolving 12:26, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
Oh, sweet, the entire "Catholic Views on Creationism" thing is going into another round? The talk page is a must-read. It especially highlights the WTF-ness of Andy's "My research says you're wrong!" comment.
Based on the history of that page, I think this was a sort of Sanity Check by PJR. You know, a test to see if Andy will push his weird agenda, even if it means directly clashing with one of the few quality sysops... again. I think Andy's had his chance, and he decided to throw it away. --Sid 14:29, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

The shaded area is about where I think the boycott occured

We seem (without much data to go on) to have about halved CPs traffic. I notice page views have jumped to 7 per user yesterday, nice to see we have so much to look at. Thanks to everyone who participated in the boycott, we may have made an impact. 08:52, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

Will you update the statistics a week from now too? Olympics and summer holiday should both be about the same in both weeks I think. (Editor at) CP:no intelligence allowed 10:28, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
Thanks for raining on my parade Editor at CP with your confounding factor. While your at it go over to CP and point out that the confounding factor in the abortion-breast cancer correlation is life expectancy, see how long you are "Editor at CP" after that. 10:33, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
Hmm, perhaps I forgot to thank you for your very interesting contribution. Forgive me for suggesting the next step. In CP I have other interests at the moment, I am debating with some RW type there, but I don't know who of us :-D (Editor at) CP:no intelligence allowed 10:46, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
It ain't me I'm not allowed back there. 10:48, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
No socks? Go find at least a pair before winter comes. (Editor at) CP:no intelligence allowed 10:56, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
I'd be interested to see stats on this site without the CP WIGO. CorryTalk 11:11, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

We tanked just as bad, but our page views improved must because the people that came either read more than usual or only those that read only WIGO CP didn't visit. 11:20, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

I'm sceptical. Personally, I suspect we had little effect on CP traffic, and the RW results reinforce this - the Olympics is probably consuming much more time away from computers the world over. DogP 13:22, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

Andy's more Crazy

Picking up the thread from the "PJR is back" section, I think Andy has gotten 'worse' because he has internalized the idea that when the site is at its worse (Lenski, Dawkins, Homosexual X) he gets the most attention. He is simply adapting his behavior to get people to look at him. He might not even know it, though I suspect this is simply a sort of Barnum and Baily move to get more eyes on him. Exasperate me!Sheesh! Not the most impressive contributor here 11:09, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

Clearly his single-minded focus on view-count despite numerous people mentioning reasons why those views might not be so positive, means he's moving in the direction of shock-jock and away from "encyclopedia". I suspect he's willing to sacrifice a number of principles as long as it results in Conservapedia getting anywhere close to Wikipedia's placement on many different search results. --Toiretni 11:14, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

Jizzmchue

Despite his accusations of our "obsession" with CP and his apology for vitriolic postings the jerk still feels the need to come round here and make his own vandalistic edits. However, this block surely takes the biscuit for hypocrisy:

So... now all editors will have to log in with BarryW, and Jean-LucP. These guys shut down any and all descent so fast, it's amazing anyone can make *any* edits there. --Waiting for Godot 17:55, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
Na. The Username thing is like the 90/10 rule. It's not actually enforced across the board; just a convenient excuse for blocking people without having to reveal the real reasons for blocking them. weaseLOIdbite me 18:50, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
Let it be known that anyone who doesn't have a sacred goat next to their computer will be blocked from RationalWiki.
*bam* "Blocked for not having a sacred goat." (or maybe it was your hints that you don't like methodological naturalism... not sure)
"But I did have a sacred goat, I swear!" "Send us pictures". --Toiretni 19:06, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

Legally speaking....

....Andy, the law's stopped clock, is right this time when he states that whoever redirected the site to an antivirus-virus is in legal trouble.-caius (ninja) 18:03, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

Yeah, but they fact that they've been doing it to many different people,[1][2][3], and have been doing it for a while[4] probably means that they're either covering their tracks very well, or live someplace where it's hard to reach them.
What I'm curious about is how these people can set up a payment-processing deal without having either 1) their payment processor cut them off, or 2) making it really obvious who the money is going to. I've heard of internet money-laundering specialists I guess... which means that this a bit more professional still.
Anyway, Andy should lay off the they're targeting us because we tell the truth spiel. --Interiot 18:16, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
Agreed with both of you. And God yes, Andy's "Anybody who does something that harms us in any form is only doing it to censor The Truth!" moaning is getting slightly annoying. --Sid 18:40, 15 August 2008 (EDT)

I've got to find a way to use that spiel in daily life. From now on, everytime Girlfriend disagrees with me, I'll tell her to stop censoring me. "Can you feed the cat? I'll be home late." "No! Stop censoring me!"-caius (ninja) 18:43, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
