IP address

An IP address, short for Internet Protocol address, is a number used to identify a specific computer on a network. Under IPv4, IP addresses consist of four numbers, with each ranging from 0 to 255, separated by dots.

Every time a user visits a web site, it identifies itself with its IP address so the information being returned can be routed to the correct location. If a visitor from a particular IP address is troublesome, it is possible to ban the IP address, or even a string of such addresses. At Conservapedia, they have taken this to new heights of absurdity.
