Hanlon's razor
From RationalWiki
Hanlon's Razor is an informal logical principle, possibly created by science fiction author Robert Heinlein, generally stated as,
| “ | Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity | ” |
or, according to one British writer, "cock-up before conspiracy".
Hanlon's razor, essentially a special case of Occam's razor as applied to interpersonal relations, is generally invoked in the context of trying to refute a conspiracy theory, based on the idea that where a conspiracy is perceived, with no other evidence available, it is more likely to be ineptitude or apathy than malice that results in the problem.
