An emergent property is a property of a system that develops from the interaction of preexisting components as the system's complexity increases; the term "spandrel", coined from architectural terminology by Stephen Jay Gould, is sometimes used for such things in evolutionary biology.

It is thought that many properties of complex life, including intelligence, are emergent properties.
