Conservapedia:Fascism
From RationalWiki
Fascism (from the Italian fascismo, from fascio bundle, fasces, group, from Latin fascis bundle) is a rightist authoritarian political system. The term was coined in Italy in the 1920s, and the political system came into power under Benito Mussolini in Italy, Adolf Hitler in Germany, and General Francisco Franco in Spain. Is Conservapedia a fascist organisation? Let's take a look...
[edit] Warning signs of fascism
Dr. Lawrence Britt[1] a respected expert, has come up with fourteen defining characteristics of fascism. They are:
[edit] Patriotism
| “ |
Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottoes, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays. Citizens who do not prominently display flags in front of their house, on the rear window of their SUV and on their lapel are suspected to be in sympathy with foreign powers seeking the nation's destruction. | ” |
- On Conservapedia
- See their logo on each page, the article flag of the united states of america, flag, flag day, united states flag code, and flag desecration amendment.
[edit] Disdain of Human Rights
| “ |
Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." Citizens tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, lengthy incarcerations of prisoners, etc. on the assumption that the government would not indulge in such actions unless it were absolutely necessary. The arrest of a suspect is considered proof of guilt. | ” |
- On Conservapedia
- Compare Conservapedia's user rights to Wikipedia's "user access levels", to our stance, where even check user is disabled as an invasion of privacy.
- "Given the amount of vandalism at Conservapedia, if the IP address check shows that the IP address is being used by two usernames the person is likely a sockpuppet who is using the same computer connection to edit Conservapedia. It is suggested that you block the person and if a mistake was made and the person was merely using a public computer that another person used (this scenario is rare and highly unlikely) the mistake can be undone if necessary. However, given the amount of vandalism at Conservapedia it is better to err on the side of caution and block the suspected sockpuppet." - Aschlafly [2]
[edit] Scapegoats
| “ |
Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, immigrants, etc. The scapegoat is used both as an excuse for extraordinary "national security" measures, and as the culprit for any economic, social or other problems the nation may experience due to the government's mismanagement. | ” |
- On Conservapedia
- All of these userhave been blocked as suspected sockpuppets of AmesG (in just 5 weeks).
[edit] Supremacy of the Military
| “ |
Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized. The military is given extra-constitutional powers over the civilian population. | ” |

- See Karajou and his extensive collection of ships
[edit] Sexism
| “ |
Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Female initiated divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution. | ” |

- See Feminism, Wife, Any of Conservative's article-childs
[edit] Controlled Mass Media
| “ |
Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or by sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is the rule rather than the exception. | ” |
- On Conservapedia
- This is the entire reason Conservapedia exists--so the people running it can broadcast their warped worldview without having to give any time to dissenters.
- "If you are a liberal, or are offended by the news articles on the Main Page, do NOT sign up. We are not going to put liberal items on the Main Page, so your suggestions will be ignored and you will be removed from this project." - DeanS[6]
[edit] Obsession with National Security
| “ |
Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses, and as an excuse to suspend constitutional provisions and human rights. The media play an important role in this process. | ” |
- On Conservapedia
- See Blocking policy for Conservapedia's policy which does not endorse the following statments;
- "Folks, I know how liberals love Last Wordism, and love the attention of continuing to fuss and insist on absurdities. A "Senior Lecturer" is not a "Professor". Accounts will be blocked if they insist on claiming it is. Finally got it?" - Aschlafly 13:00, 12 June 2008 (EDT)[7]
- "Note to editor's - if you remove the Image:Punishment.jpg from this article, you will be blocked for one day." - DeanS 15:29, 9 June 2008 (EDT)[8]
- "Users Wandering, StatsMsn, and AdenJ: Stay out of other users' quarrels with the administration, or you'll get the same thing that this user got. And don't you ever, EVER, tell another administrator what to do on this site. I'm going to watch this page for another twenty-four hours. You have that long to apologize." - TerryH 22:30, 14 June 2008 (EDT)[9]
- Here Jimmy complains about a blockimg and is sysop abuse complaint is met with a block for him.
[edit] Religion and Government are Intertwined
| “ |
Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions. Sympathetic religious leaders are enlisted in the fascist cause, and dissidents are excommunicated or diposed of by other means. | ” |
- On Conservapedia
- See Classroom prayer, Andy's lecture on the Establisment clause.
- "We are looking for knowledge and inspiration here, and that comes from God. In most countries parents do not have the freedom even to have a class like this. The main reason we have freedoms is because Americans are more devoted to religion than in other countries." - Aschlafly[10]
[edit] Corporate Power is Protected
| “ |
Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite. This provides cheap labor for business with few safeguards against dangerous or unfair working conditions. | ” |
[edit] Labor Power is Suppressed
| “ |
Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed. Labor unions are portrayed as selfish and unpatriotic. | ” |

- See Writing assignment.
- "[U]nions caused great harm, including senseless violence and lost jobs." -Aschlafly[11]
[edit] Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
| “ |
Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked. Academia and the arts are tolerated only insofar as they can be used to provide support for the fascist agenda. | ” |
- On Conservapedia
- See Professor values, Professor style, Liberal professor and the Lenski affair.
- "I wanted to create an article on photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, but it was apparently already created and then deleted. Please undelete it, so an article can be made about one of the most marvelous photographers of the modern era. Naturally, I will not include any objectionable material." -Tom Moore 18:04, 25 May 2008 (EDT)
[edit] Obsession with Crime and Punishment
| “ |
Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws and maintain control of society. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism and security. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations. | ” |

[edit] Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
| “ |
Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders. | ” |
- On Conservapedia
- See Schlafly Rearguard, DeanS blocked all these users for 5 years or "infinite" for messing with Andy, CollegeRepublican.
[edit] Fraudulent Elections
| “ |
Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. In other cases elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections. | ” |
- On Conservapedia
- See the sysop contest, in particular HelpJazz who has had 10-1 support since February 2008 and never attained edit rights, yet Learn together becomes a sysop in April after a very haphazard discussion. And then there's CollegeRepublican who nobody knows for certain who he is, and Freedom777, who gained sysopship after doing nothing but work on an intelligent design draft article. Addendum: The pages for the election process have now been deleted. All user rights are now awarded entirely at the discretion of Andrew Schlafly.
[edit] Secret Police
| “ |
Fascist regimes employ a secret police to spy on the civilian population and encourage neighbor to spy on each other and family members to report on each other. Dissent is supressed in a society where no one knows who they can trust, and who might report them for the most casual criticism of the government. | ” |
